Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

Today was my first foray into something that wasn’t structural…

There are two deck portions that sit below the main portions of the deck (I assume they will have grating or covers over them in places but will apparently be visible to some extent). Anyway, I got to do some decking.

To say I agonized over how to do this well is an understatement. According to Fred Hocker at the Vasa Museum the decking on the original is apparently random: random lengths set in a random pattern. And while that might be historically accurate when I did a mock-up I confess I didn’t like the look all that much. What to do? Am I beholden to historical accuracy or is there room for artistic license? The DeAg instructions call for a two-butt shift which is as far from random as I could imagine.

What I ended up doing was a five-butt shift. Why? It looked less like a pattern than other layouts but didn’t suffer from ‘randomness’ as a liability. I also kept the plank lengths the same – 60 mm which at a 1:65 scale would mean the full size boards would have been about 13 feet long. I thought this sounded reasonable but I’m an orthodontist not a shipbuilder so I might be completely off the reservation. Anyway, I felt this plank length produced a pleasing appearance. Not too busy and not too spartan.

I also agonized over the appearance of the decking. I tested out more stains, oils, techniques than I care to confess to. For example...

I think I spent less time choosing names for my children. I ended up selecting a simple summer oak stain and a matte poly finish. I’m pleased with the result, but I can’t help but wonder what you all think? The deck portions I have built thus far will be less visible than what is to come so if I need to change things I can and will. I could even overlay what I have completed to make it all look the same.

Thanks for checking in - and I am happy to hear your thoughts or suggestions!
I think it looks great! That's the same pattern I chose, since there was not any guidance on that feature.

Welcome to SOS, Paul!

I think you chose wisely with the D’Ag Vasa; it is, by far, the best of the available models.

You are off to a fantastic start, and I appreciate your ambition as a new builder. While I work in plastic, at present, I can offer you a bit of universal advice:

Above all else - consider your financial investment and then triple your investment in time to work through the construction carefully and methodically; eat that elephant one bite at a time, and you won’t choke on it.

I would also encourage you to do some of the ornamental paint work, concurrently, as you work on the structure, for two reasons:

First, there is so much ornament to do - and polychromatic, at that - that doing it all at once becomes a real chore. The temptation to rush through it can then become really hard to resist, but resist you absolutely should. In my opinion, two things often spoil what is otherwise a well-made model; glaringly wrong and/or out of scale details, and rushed sloppiness in fit and/or finish. Take your time, and you will never regret the extra effort.

The other major benefit of doing a little paint work at a time is that it gives you a break from the more tedious aspects of construction, like careful planking, for example. However, carefully painted ornaments are an enormous motivator to continue working on the build in a focused way, as you begin to imagine how vivid and spectacular the ship will look with your bright-work in place.

Now, a little specific advice.

As for fairing your hull, take a generous amount of time, and a reasonably stiff, yet flexible batten, to check all up and down your framing for highspots and hollows. Mark your highspots with cross-hatches, to roughly show what has to be removed, and use some similar annotation for areas that need to be firred-out with strip wood.

Then, do a pretty close fairing of your hull with the batten. Once you are really pretty close to fair, I suggest filling between stations, below the lower gun deck with blocks of balsa. At the very least, this should be done at the bow and stern. Doing so in-between, though, will provide greater surface area for glueing your first layer of planking. Also, if you do a very careful job of final fairing, you will ensure that your hull does not have any distracting bulges or hollows, after the finished planking is on and oiled, and the glancing light reveals everything. Again, take your time.

Lastly, I recently watched a builder make a fine model of this kit on MSW. He had been contracted to build the kit “exactly” as described in the instructions; although I can’t say from first-hand knowledge of the kit, this builder said that the instructions directed the builder to “plank” the stem and stern post as though they were continuations of the hull strakes. Despite his talent as a builder, and his proper knowledge of framing construction - he had paid orders and did as he was instructed.

The advice I will offer you is not to do this, as it is so completely wrong and distracting that it won’t matter how carefully you construct and finish the rest of the model. These big-timber framing elements have a very specific structure and joinery. Because the actual ship still exists, of course, it is an easy task to find out what her built-up stem would look like. With that knowledge, in hand, you can then veneer the stem/keel/sternpost to look like it is a built-up structure. Alternatively, you can scribe incised lines into a simplified three piece structure for the S/K/S. Or, you can go “whole hog” and build up what would be visible of the S/K/S. Any of those three options will be far superior to “planking” these elements.

I am loving this build, so far, and look forward to following along. Keep going - you’re doing a fantastic job!

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to share this thoughtful post.

I want to affirm your suggestion that I go ahead and begin working on ornamentation/painting. While I was going to just wait and do all that later I have already realized that the building process is more mentally taxing than I had anticipated (and slower!). Working on different aspects of the model seems like wise counsel. Thanks.

Interesting discussion on the DeAg planking instructions vis a vis the stem/keel/sternpost. This is an excellent example of why I need help from more experienced ship-builders. I tracked down some images from a book and understand what you have described. I'll do my best to represent this big timber accurately. I appreciate your expertise!

Before you start fairing the edges of the frames, paint them black. That way, you can see when your sanding approaches the edge of the curvature of the frame along one edge and stop before you take off too much wood and potentially create a flat spot on your hull. You can build up a mistake by gluing a piece of thin planking material onto the edge of a frame and re-sand it to shape, but you're better off just removing what you're suppose to and no more.

I used a small mouse sander to make fairing the frames go faster. The point can get in corners closer to the keel, where you finish the frame with a hand sanding block. It's a tough thing eyeballing the angles and checking them by bending a piece of planking over the frames ever minute of sanding. You're constantly afraid of taking off too much wood or making the angles incorrectly. You just have to go slow, trust your eyes, and check, check and check again to make sure it's going right.

I used CA glue or Titebond II Premium PVA glue. Like Uwek said, you're going to get 12 answers to that question! Any good yellow carpenter's glue is a must. When choosing thin fast setting, medium, or thicker slow setting and filling CA glue, choose medium since it's the most versatile. Get about 4 average bottles to start with. You'll use it. CA actually does pretty well for strength and I haven't seen any bonds break down in the last two years on the hull. When planking the first layer of planks, glue the planks edge-to-edge with PVA. You can us CA to make them stick quickly to frames in many places, but since you will be using a pin pusher tool and thin 7mm brass pins to hold the planks in place, PVA is a better choice even though it doesn't dry as fast. CA joints are brittle, and PVA joints are more flexible, so most of the planking except for those few springy planks in tight corners that WILL NOT STAY IN PLACE and drive you nuts are held with PVA.

Since all my frames were laser cut they were burnt brown on the edges already. As a result I did exactly as you described...I used the dark edge as a guide to know when I was in danger of going too far. That worked really well and as far as I know I did not over-shape. I wish I had thought of a powered sander. Then again, that's probably a better tool in your hands than in my novice ones. The sanding blocks I used were probably a safer (albeit slower) route.

It may be slower, but there is less chance of over sanding, and you take longer doing visual inspection to make sure you didn't miss any spots. Looking awesome so far. I have to finish La Couronne so I can start HMS Sovereign of the Seas and catch up with you! :)

This is an amazing list, but from my point of view, does not reflects the cost of building "a model ship" as many elements/tools of your list will be used for years to come.... and for many kits.

Besides, buying so many model ship aftermarker parts is a "modeler decision" that depends on many things, like to what level of quality and historical/scale accuracy you want to take your model ship kit, what kind of woods "you would like to use" instead of the provided ones... etc..... "modelers decisions"

Cheers
Daniel
