I had a couple of hours shore leave granted in Venice between beers, so I visited the Maritime Museum. Unfortunately the sheds housing the ships were shut. A fascinating visit nonetheless!

How venice is supported on the mud lagoon. The blue acrylic is the sea level:

I hadn't appreciated just how big the stern lanterns on sailing ships were:

Venetian gondolas are assymetrical so that they go straight in spite of the offset propulsion. (Please excuse the reflection of my feet!)

A model / diorama of how a ship was careened in dock:

And finally, another option for modelling sails:

Fantastic photos Jim, I was there about 10 years ago, and I could have spent the whole week in the museum (Arsenale?), but the wife wouldn't let me.

And I was there earlier this year, when Venice was quietish, but knew nothing about the museum. . One model I'd like to do is of the venetian motorboats, such beautiful craft. I thought the gondolas looked a bit strange, understand why now.

You definitely learn something now every day on this site.
I never knew that about the Venetian gondolas.
Thank you for sharing.
