I am building a ROUGH replica of the Bluenose 2, from scratch, (I am lofting my own plans), using the bread and butter method for the hull. I am using the 1:48 scale (1" = 1 foot)
LOA of the Bluenose 2 was 143 ft (without the Main Boom and Bowsprit). So my model will be 35 & 3/4 inches long.

I understand the beam at its widest point was 26' 11". I will use 27 feet, (It just makes my life easier.)

My Immediate problem is, WHERE is the widest beam?

Ron

booso my model

I have lofted the plans for side view and the top view

Hi Ron,
Related to the drawings of L.B. Jenson in his Saga, it's just behind the main mast:

PS: Perhaps starting a build-log? A scratch build of a Bluenose is always very interesting.

Thanks for your reply, Peter.

Hi Peter
Thank you for your reply. That is roughly where I thought it migh be. From the L. B. Jenson drawing you sent me, I determined that the main mast was 2 mm in diameter. The distance from aft of the main mast to the blue mid point line is 4 mm. I understand that the main mast on the Bluenose 2 was 2 feet in diameter. So 2 mm = 2 feet, therefore 4 mm is 4 feet. Using my scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot, my widest point of the my model will be 1 inch behind the main mast. Problem solved.

As I mentioned this will be a rough build. It will be displayed outside from spring to fall. I live in Bobcaygeon Ontario, Canada. Next to our large deck, I had built, we had an old, huge birch tree. I had it cut down but had the crew leave the stump at 6 feet tall. This is where my rough model of the Bluenose 2 will be displayed from spring to fall.

My build would be a sacrilege on this site with so many matilculously built models.

But, in case I do start a build log, how do I start one?

My build will not have the beautiful sheer of the Bluenose 2, as I am using 2 x 8 s to construct the bread and butter of the hull. So my sheer, for the time being, will be flat, unless I can come up with some way to use the railing construction to provide a curved sheer. Time will tell.

Anywas thanks for solving my problem as to the location of the widest beam.

Hi Ron, I agree with Peter in regards to the widest Frame. If you can get your hands on a copy of Bluenose II, Saga of the Great Fishing Schooners, by J.B. Jenson it will be a very valuable resource for your project. I scratch built a POB 1/32 model of the original Bluenose last year since it was the 100 year anniversary, and found the Jenson book very helpful for the dimensions of masts and rigging.

Hi Ron,
Calculation from a posted tiny picture to measurements of the parts for your build ……….. mmmmm, that’s a challenge.;)
As @fourseas wrote in his reply, try to get a (second hand) copy of the Saga:

A lot of drawing and dimensions of the ‘original’ BN-II.

There where more who wanted to know how to start a build-log. See for example this post / conversation:
And a lot of tutorials:

In a build-log you can ask as much as you want, related to your build. Preferably with clarification with some photos. And a lot of member are willing to help and answer you questions.
About your quote “My build would be a sacrilege on this site with so many matilculously built models.”. No way, what you wrote about your plans, it would be ‘different’ and therefore ‘special’. A scratch build is always interesting.

PS: In the right above corner is the search-option.
And here, in post 1, you find a excel-file with almost all the different build-log’s of Bluenoses, from all kind of kits, from the Original as well as the BN-II.
When you start one, I’ll ad you on that list. :)
Regards, Peter
