Why is a Matte finish so popular ?

My preference is matte or satin look varnish. The structure of the wood can then easily be seen and identified.A glossy varnish shows more iirregularities of the applied surface.I also use alcohol solublle dyes which does not cover the structure of wood before varnishing of course.
Actually it is the Captains Choice:)
 
Writers writing about building model ships in the 1930-1940 era sometimes recommended an “eggshell” finish. This is one step up from a flat finish in the gloss spectrum. In those days, model builders were mixing their own paints from Japan Colors. It would be interesting to know how this effect was produced.
