What steps do you take to prepare wood or kit wood prior to starting a model? Sanding, sealing, staining or ????

I just sand. I try to use a variety of different wood species and avoid paints and stains. Sort of "painting with wood". I don't seal the wood, either. PVA glues, and even epoxy tend to adhere poorly to finished wood. Apply the finish (wipe on polyurethane) after assembly and glue up.

Yes, it works well. Obviously with complex pieces that’s not possible so I use a brush to get into the little nooks and crannies. Just make sure you brush off all the excess poly or the finish coat will be too thick, obscuring fine detail.

I also agree with the Doc's answer you. And you need any more questions there will answers to you asap. You can either ask Don or my self personally if you want or any member here.

I appreciate that. I built a Billings Bluenose in the early 1970's and enjoyed the process quite a bit even if I made a mess of it. I have been lurking on the edge of the hobby for over 10 years and now I am getting ready to get ready to maybe actually do something.
