Wood Shavings Models

I was bimbling around on the National Maritime Museum website looking at the models they have in their collection and came across these:-

We all know about the bone models made by Napoleonic prisoners, but I have never heard of models made using wood shavings. When I think that these were made with the most rudimentary tools and then take a look at what I have available to me on my workbench it is somewhat humbling!
