I think it depends on what you want to do - darkening, changing colour, wood protection.......

Thanks for your response! I'm building Captain John Smith's Shallop (my first ship build), and I see that my model is not looking like the nice, weathered-wood look of the photo on the top of the box. That's what I'd like to achieve. Any thoughts?

Minwax stains work well. They come in a large variety of shades. I also seal my wood with sanding sealer first to seal the wood. There are others here who can advise you also.

Professionals use bitumen varnish.

Water based products can swell wooden surfaces. Oil or spirit based products do not.

It can be tinted with Carnauba wax, the deck is covered with it, the color is graphite.

Hey Kermit. I built this Shallop and used Tung Oil. It looks very nice. Took away the look of the raw wood. If I did it again though I think I would have liked it to be a little darker.

Recently, I have gone to gel stains! I am limited to plastic build, but, believe it or not, they work great! I just wish I'd known this sooner! For me, if I have to use liquid, Minwax is the way to go.

I recommend doing some experimenting on scrap wood to get the look you want--sometimes all you need is a coat of oil or varnish to bring up the wood.
