Thanks for your response! I'm building Captain John Smith's Shallop (my first ship build), and I see that my model is not looking like the nice, weathered-wood look of the photo on the top of the box. That's what I'd like to achieve. Any thoughts?
Minwax stains work well. They come in a large variety of shades. I also seal my wood with sanding sealer first to seal the wood. There are others here who can advise you also.
Hey Kermit. I built this Shallop and used Tung Oil. It looks very nice. Took away the look of the raw wood. If I did it again though I think I would have liked it to be a little darker.
Recently, I have gone to gel stains! I am limited to plastic build, but, believe it or not, they work great! I just wish I'd known this sooner! For me, if I have to use liquid, Minwax is the way to go.
