and I think the popularity is because they are so long they have to be small it seems the smaller ships much more popular because their size allows larger models to be made
They were not all that long - Cromartyshire had a hull length of 249 feet! At 8 feet to 1 inch (1:96) that seems a popular scale, it only comes out at 31 inches which is not much different from most of the expensive Victory or Cutty Sark kits. If the builder finds them too big, they should use a smaller scale, so that at 16 feet to 1 inc (1:192), the hull would only be 15.6 inches long, or the scale of the model above, it is only 7.8 inches long! Model shipbuilders, as a rule, simply do not like building anything without guns. I have stopped taking them to our local model ship club because they seldom get more than a casual glance. But collectors really love them because they are different, small and scarce. A common reason for not building miniatures is "you can't get the detail in anything less than 1:96 scale!"

That is why they are so popular with collectors! They can be transported easily. Their wives don't moan about "large dust collectors" as they don't take up much room. They cost next to nothing to build, and can be as detailed as you wish. They do not require lots of tools, lots of energy, or lots of time to build. Bob
