As promised (or threatened??) my first try at doing an actual build log.
As usual the instructions on these ever so cheap but amazingly accurate kits are somewhat lacking:
I do like to try and add a bit more realism so went for planking the deck because this model's inscribed deck planking is very poor. So I dug out some spare decking from Model Shipways wonderful 'Flying Fish' (I built it several years ago - they give lots of wood in their models. I love them!) but realised that in planking the deck I would make the gunwhales too shallow. I also wanted to remove the kit's frame extensions and add more accurate ones so I hit on the idea of building the new gunwhales but not attaching them to the frames so I could cut them off.
I hope the following pictures help you to understand what I'm trying to say:
Original deck in place.
Added a square section wood strip to support the new gunwhale plank.
Glued and pinned the new gunwhale to the deck and the square section wood strip (being careful not to glue it to the frames) and then used a snipper to remove the frame extensions.
Next is to clean up the deck and do the planking.
But first.... some gratuitous photos of earlier models
1:350 HMS Kellington which I was my ship when I was in the Royal Naval Reserve.
and HMS Victory - another cheap Chinese produced kit.
Cheers
Tom
