Build Log: "Skipjack" by Midwest

It’s LOM. No yard arm/square sails. I’m a novice when it come to sailing but anything that floats or fly’s has fascinated me since I was young.
Portals complete on forward cabin. I thought about cutting out the deck under the cabin and makeshift a modest interior. But, will try to keep this short build simple. We shall see, still undecided.
The portholes look good. I just acquired the Model shipways "Skipjack Willie E Bennett". Going to build it....again. "Again", because I had one @ 95% completed when water dripped on it and it was ruined.

Are a Main and jib in the coming work? Furled or full up for sailing? Nice clean work on this skip jack. Rich

The flip side was a little tricky. transposed the entire image. Then transposed the lettering so it was not backwards, then cleaned up the colors in Procreate.

Will have more photos this weekend. OOD will be on a girlfriend vacation starting Thursday and not back till Sunday. Workshop time!!

You have some computer skills that I don't have to copy and past the image to scale and then mirror it around. Younger minds and abilities are the future while my old school hands and eyes do what they can to improvise. Nicely done. Rich

Rich, thanks. I think we’re about the same age...

My posted photo is a fib as that was some years ago. I have a couple of more decades under my bow than you. Back in the service '63 - 67 I was using computers that the civilians didn't know existed. It was decades later that I learned CAD for architectural work but that was before 3-D was out there and when it was my use was pretty limited for what we then needed for our design and construction documents. Primarily just an extension of drafting board work. Oh yes. . . I'll be 8 decades before the winter comes around again if COVID doesn't scuttle my cruise before then.
Keep up your good work. Rich

I have great respect for my elders and I appreciate the conversations had on SOS, where there are many wise and seasoned elders indeed.
Thanks for the banter Rich!

Making some progress of late. Managed to complete the rub rail and added additional touches by insetting a metal rod to mimic the actual rub strip on the Wilma Lee.
I cut a groove in the stock Rub Strip on my drill press. Set the belt for high speed and made a groove jig to hold the stock material as I fed the strip through.

I then glued the modified Rub strip in place after checking the fit of the steel rod.

After glueing up the wood portion only to the hull and completing the roller stanchions, I then cut and grinder the steal rub strips, gluing in place. I am satisfied with the affect.

Hope all are well!

I've built several of those Midwest kits and I think they're awesome. They're great, too, if you have some scrap hardwoods you can really step them up a notch. You're doing awesome on this one. Love the Wilma Lee emblem work. Very nice touch.

Thanks Christy,
just finishing the sails which I changed up a bit. Used thin cotton tight weave material and rolled on acrylic white. Will post pictures at some point.
Are you building anything presently?
WR,

WR,
I have an Artesania Latina San Francisco II build going, the build log is here:

It's my first ship in several years. Keep going on your Skipjack. I'm anxious to see the final result.

Will do! I’ll be honest though. I tire some times of fiddling with stuff. Feel like I’m all thumps the older I get. I don’t seem to have the patience I used too.

beautiful work on the SF II! Extensive list of photos to review and take note for future builds. Thanks!!

I'm a gluten for punishment often biting off more than I can chew. Not just in eating but model building as well. I have decided to build at the apprentice level (where I should be). Recently, I was rummaging a Antique/Flea market event and ran across an unopened "Skipjack" model. Nothing fancy but definitely a project to get the juices flowing again.

Nothing much to report with first few steps. Easy to remove pieces from sprue, minor blade work, a little touch up sanding and the haul takes form. I did spend some time mixing up acrylic was for the deck pieces. Measured 1/8" gaps and scored the wood three times with the blunt side of the exacto blade. Lightly sanded in the direct of the score marks with 500 grit SP then light brown acrylic paint applied with a paper towel.

Once again, It's good to be building again. Will return to the Connie project at some point.
Hallo @Danno71
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Birthday-Cake
