I've seen a number of completed model ships and rather curious the colors painted on some of the hulls for the same model. I can't tell if the colors chosen were based on historical fact, manufacturer suggestion or builder's choice. I'm starting on the kit from AL Le Hassard. It seems this model has different colors depending on the age of the kit. Are there any resources that describe the typical ship colors based on country and/or century?

The most important point is to avoid vivid blue, greens, yellows and reds as they did not exist, or at least not affordably in quantities to paint a ship.
Ochre, black and white are always safe, particularly in that period.
I unfortunately do not have sources for that particular ship.

Blue and turquoise were often used in the 18th cenury as accent colors- the sheer strake for example. Take a look at the AOTS series cover illustrations
Indeed, and my apologies, I meant mid XIX century, if the question was related to Le Hussard of 1848.
Throughout the XVIII century, blue, yellow red and even green accents were used, mainly on aft structures, bulwarks and inside,
(although we see very often way too deep or vivid colours on models)
That tends to disappear after the end of the Napoleonic wars.
