This will be my log for Canoe #1. Pretty much a “straight” build as designed and shown in the documentation.

I LOVE these canoes !!. I used to paddle quite a bit, back when I wore a younger man’s clothes. My favorite boat was a “stripper” much like this one with slightly less upturn. I would float along near shore in the evenings just watching and listening while the world slipped past in the ripple.

Currently, I plan to build two (or three..!!!) of these in different lengths with different appointments. One will have some contrasting strips and another will have some Indian heritage stuff. We’ll see how it all works out.!! I will probably work on all of them simultaneously to some degree.

This one (#1) will be “as designed”.

Getting ready....Waiting on lumber...

I do too! I had a "camper" and a "Prospector" style. The admiral and I did a lot of wilderness canoe / camping back in the day. I once canoed from Washington Island Wisconsin to Fairport Michigan, stopping for an overnite on St Martin Island and Summer Island. Canoed the perimeter of Isle Royal National Park once, stayed for a week several times in the Sylvania Wilderness area and many trips to Boundry Waters in Minnesota. Brings back lots of good memories. Those canoes were really put through their paces durability wise so I had to make a few repairs and much maintenance to them. I'd really like to try a 1 : 1 scale prospector canoe.

I plan on 3 kits, cedar, cherry and pearwood, tricking them out like the one's I used to paddle.

Yep.... The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (ie. the UP.. where the “yoopers” live); the Boundary Waters canoe area; the Katahdin in Maine..... All are wonderfully wild areas that still exist in a fairly pristine state.

Incidentally, the Katahdin was named by the Penobscot Indians of that area who (also incidentally...) have a canoe named after them.!! Old Town Canoe, of the same area, has been continuously producing the “Penobscot” for many years.!! Sadly I sold mine about thirty years ago. Still have one OT canoe though, a smallish, flat-bottomed craft that is stable and does well on calm water.

Sounds like grand memories.

I did make it to Boundary Waters with scouts, but I had my handicap son with me. We held down base camp and did some hiking in local area.

Other than Black Flies, was great time up north.

You just had to bring up the Black Flies.!! Ruined a perfectly good reminiscence..!!!
Gosh...those things are a real mess. They terrorize, and have been known to drive people crazy.....

I'm going back to my GOOD memories.!!

Yes, for many life is a circle that comes back upon itself - dependent as a new born babe and dependent in the last short days of our lives. It is the space, the dash in between those dates that counts. 1941 - 20?? PT-2

Good wood selections as I have learned the hard way that mahogany in the species that Northeastern Scale Lumber sells is very dark so it will be an interesting outcome. Have to use the water based poly as I don't need any more darkening with the finish. PT-2
