I am currently waiting, ( not very patiently) for this model to arrive so I thought I would use some time to find my way around the computer side of things.
This will be my first build log and I am no expert builder so any input, advice, and tips would be greatly appreciated. Why the Golden Hind you may ask.
Well I just finished reading ,"The secret voyage of Sir Francis Drake" by Samuel Bawlf and was intrigued by this ship that sailed around the world from 1577 to 1580 so decided to build it.
In the meantime here I sit waiting for the Fed Ex man to arrive. Hopefully I will be updating this log in not the too far distant future.

I am looking forward to see your log starting - and cross my fingers, that the kit will arrive soon

Look forward to seeing your progress.
I am half way through another of Drakes ships from Occre, the Revenge.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to the build but the painting is scaring me. Looks like you did a good job.

All those pieces are cut out wood, painted, the kit supplied paper stickers, I wasn't happy with that. It's up to each person, how you want to do your project. In the end , it's a great achievement, whatever you do.

Well Im still waiting for the Fedex man. My model is now further from my home than when it was shipped eleven days ago. Seems like Fedex feel it should emulate the original and go all the way round the world before I get my hands on it. In the meantime i'm practicing being patient.

While waiting for your build to begin, I hope you don't mind a little diversion. I went through my stash to find a vintage version of this famous ship. I love these old vintage Scientific and Sterling kits. After opening up the box after 20 yrs I'm tempted to give it a go.

While on the subject of vintage kits I saw a video on YouTube (
) the other day by Micro Mark tools which I learned was originally Scientific Models. An interesting video. Too bad they gave up kit manufacturing but I understand $$$ is the bottom line

you definitely should, maybe I need to find something to keep me occupied.

Well I take back everything I said about Fed Ex, my model arrived this morning. On first looks i'm happy with it. the overall quality looks good.
The written instructions are just about useless, a good thing I wasn't planning on referring to them very much. The photos though are a good quality.

A quick update on the build. I decided to install the false decks onto the frame and then install the decking. the plans call to plank the false deck and then install it complete but I couldn't see me getting that right and im glad I did it my way. I will fit the gun ports next and then its my favorite part. Fairing.

Well I have been busy planking. It hasn't turned out as well as I would have liked but I'm ok with it. If anyone else does this model beware I had 1 strip of planking left and I didn't waste any, also the the planking very brittle which may in part be due to the dry climate I live in, so I will have a few repairs to do as I sand it. I'm thinking I will give it a light stain and then oil it but I'm open to any suggestions on the best way to finish it. Well back to sanding for now.IMG_9521.JPGIMG_9523.JPGIMG_9525.JPG

Always your choice and probably many answers, the kit instructions probably gave a suggested colour to use or you could try these SOS guides for inspiration.

After a great deal of thought I decided to tackle some of the painting on this ship. Occre supply paper print outs for this but it didn't seem quite right to glue pieces of paper to the ship, I also didn't trust myself to do a good job of glueing them on. So my plan is to dry fit parts then take them off to paint them on the work bench then glue them back in place. I have shown one of the parts in progress on the bench. Overall I am pleased so far with how it has turned out.

Time for an update. Occre supply this kit with brass stairs which didn't seem right so I made 3 sets of wooden ones which I always have problems making. It took 3 attempts but settled on the one seen. Most of the painting has gone fairly well, I may try my hand at some carvings which will be a first for me. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hey there hammer. She is looking great so far. I just got this same kit for Christmas. Dont quite know yet if I'll do this one next or some of the others I have in waiting. But I had looked though the kit and I have been already making notes of what to change and I love how you went from the paper to hand painting the red and yellow accents. Also I see you changed from the thread to chains for the bottom dead eyes. And I totally agree with you on the stairs too.

Thanks, yes I made a few changes. Brass stairs just didn't seem right either so I made wooden ones. Also beware the grate is too wide, I cut it narrower but I should have made it smaller still. It leaves very little room for the guns.
