HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning.

The foredeck carronade has been a fun challenge. The instructions did not include any rigging for these and was a little chunky with no detail.

I did a little research and found this plan which more accurately reflects these and I believed would look better for the character of my build.

I have limited resources and some I could not make(rookie level) e.g. the elevation ring handles or the rotational thread on these.

I got so into making these I did not take progress pictures - oops.

The arrows show what I simulated being the the elevation ring, hinge, the sliding gap and ring for the main recoil line and I added the dispart sight.

There was no rigging include so I made the eyelets(ran out a long time ago) and added the blocks. I used the same ones for my other cannons to keep consistency. Not the best but it’s what we learn as we build our first model.

I used the kit cannon and base plywood.

Cheers and keep have a blast (pun intended ROTF) when making your beautiful ships.

Buon giorno.

Ciao Frank. Yes I did look at those. I used them to achieve some of what I wanted. The carronades on the Portsmouth Victory are also not really accurate in that they do not include the elevation rings etc. I couldn't make the hooks to scale (and don't have these on my cannons) for the rigging and have not used the double sheave blocks on my other cannons so kept with consistency. I am thinking of painting the small black rectangles where the wheel blocks go through the base. All my eyelets I started off with brass so I wont blacken these.

Thanks
Grant

Very nice carronades Grant. At first I wanted to say that the black of the barrels are the same hue as the black of the wood and that you should try to achieve more of a metal-look to the barrels. But ... after at looking at the very nice pictures that Frank posted, I now see that they look the same on the replica as well. So in hindsight they look just like those on the replica - well done! Thumbsup

Hi Grant!

The threads made of miniature screws can be used for the height adjustment of the carronades.

The carronades look good and fit very well with your accurate style of construction. Too bad there are delivery restrictions and import problems for some materials to South Africa. I realize how comfortable I am here.

Best regards
Thomas

Hi Thomas. Thanks for this. I’m sure I can find micro threads from a hardware store- SA not that bad ROTF. It’s more getting specific model supplies and accessories which are the problem. I like your idea and will finish my Carronades off nicely. Thank you.

Ciao Grant!

Distinti saluti
Tommaso
Buona sera, che diametro sono questi bulloni?
