Nostalgic! No video games then, thank God! One other observation. Not a single person in the photo is overweight. Go figure.....well maybe the shop owner on the far left, but looks like he earned it. :)
Very nostalgic. I love that picture, it says a lot.

My first hobby shop doesn’t exist anymore. In fact I can not find an existing shop that stock model ships…plastic or wood, plus accessory pieces parts. A hobby shop near me stock some trains, but mostly RC planes and RC cars. Model ships and accessory parts are mostly from online sources now. Although I am grateful for the online sources, they just don’t have the nostalgic pleasure of browsing around an old fashioned hobby store…poking into the corners to find a treasure…sigh…

I agreed with you on that one.
Down here in Miami we had a very famous hobby shop called “Orange Blossom”. It was a fully loaded store with everything imaginable and all of a sudden it went out of business.

In my early teens I remember doing a round trip of 30 miles on my bicycle to buy Airfix ship models (large ones) from Hereford. (weather permitting). Having got to know the hobby shop guy we came to an arrangement whereby I would send a cheque 1st class & he would put the kit on the next day's bus, then I'd collect from my local bus station later (FOC). Can anyone think of that happening today?

That is a magnificent history.
Never heard of something like that before.
In my case, I also rode my bicycle 3 miles away from my house to the store.
Thank you for sharing your story with us, it’s amazing.

OH, OH BOY DO I REMEMBER ORANGE BLOSSOM, MANY TIMES THERE MUCH ENJOYMENT. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE ALL DON
Donfarr:
I found the information you where looking for on EBay and bought them because we will need them whenever we start reproducing the model.
When they arrive on Monday, I will make some copies for you.

Hi Stuart,
I did exactly the same as you in my far distant teens to buy the Revell Cutty Sark and CSS Alabama from my 'local' model shop in Northallerton, Yorkshire.
Incidentally, I never progressed so far as to use the bus company - there wasn't one!. We lived up on the North York Moors, in a tiny village, and a local farmer owned a flat bed wagon on which he mounted a removable animal cage. On market day he would remove the cage and mount a rudimentary bus body on top of the wagon - he would then go round all the local villages and pick up those folk who wanted to go to the market in Thirsk, leave them for two or three hours, and then take them back home!
Talk about enterprise! - I don't think the police would look kindly on the practice today!

Memories

When I was a young lad living in the country side my parents would drive thirty miles every two or three weeks for groceries at the nearest town. I would always save my allowance money to buy Dinky Toys from England at a small hobby shop in town.

That is a very wonderful story.
We should make a discussion group about all of these beautiful childhood/hobby stories, they are all amazing.

Don't a lot of us do it!

Similar to asking a cyclist how many bike he/she must have. The answer is always - N+1 (N = existing collection. 1 = the must have can't live without going to buy the update soon)

Yes Donfarr, I will need your address.

I do remember one of my first models, my dad bought me the BIG Revell Saturn V rocket kit that stood several feet tall, and the Apollo module kit that both came out about same time in late 60's space race.

WOW!!! I remember Orange Blossom. That is where I spent all of my lawn cutting money. All of my funds went to plastic models and slot car racing. On Saturday, my best friends dad would load us up in his car and drop us off at Orange Blossom for the afternoon. This was the early to mid 60's. Great memories.
