Hi all,

I just completed my first build of the Mamoli 1:64 Britannia yacht and wanted to find a way of hanging it on the wall. Looking around the internet, the only wall brackets specifically designed for model ships are no longer being sold on any site. I started looking at wall mounts for surf boards and paddles which came fairly close but not quite enough.

I would be interested in hearing how you guys have solved this problem of wanting to hang your model ship on the wall.

Perhaps you could manufacture your own ship mount and attach it to the wall with anchors. Something like this perhaps?
Crude example, but you get the idea. Here's a thought, what if the supports were tentacles? :D

Kurt, that's an excellent idea. Those look a bit like guitar hangers (although looking at mine they're a bit shallow and I wouldn't trust a model ship balancing securely on them). But perhaps there are some available from music shops which would do the job or be easily modified to do so.

Kurt, I was trying to figure out the same thing. I decided a floating glass shelf. Not totally the same, but in appearance it’s almost the same. They sell glass shelves and almost invisible brackets at big box hardware stores.

Hello Jcob,
An option for you would be to put your build in a display case; then use the appropriate sized standard shelf brackets with a shelf to hold the display case. That would prevent having to dust and keep the model clean. Much easier to keep the display case clean.

That's what I was going to say. Just mount a shelf to the wall and put the ship in a cradle or mounted on pedestals on the shelf.
I'm interested in what you eventually use. :)

What an excellent idea…. Do you steam bend wood ?
ummmm. What about dust and keeping her clean ?
Jacob, that is a great idea but you will always a huge problem, that is “The Dust”.
All of my models have a plexiglass cover.
If your model has rigging and you have waxed the rigging, you will have very ugly rigging within few months.
Open air and finish models don’t mix very well.

Mounting a ship on a wall like this would mean having no dust protection. Having a glass case on the wall limits your viewing angle to one side. A standalone case offers the best viewing from all sides but takes up a lot of space. Each type of display has its disadvantages.

Hi Jcob
I fasten the model in its cradle to a plank. The plank is held in place with 2 steel rods in holes drilled into adjoining studs, then in 2 holes drilled into the edge of the plank.
Once a year I take the model out of its cradle and put it in a temporary one ( a box with V’s cut in. Then I use a micro vacuum attachment , $20 at any vac. store and an artist brush to clean it. Takes about 10 minutes.
In my case 10 minutes x 8. Hope this helps.

Welcome aboard SOS, Jcob! Out of curiosity, what makes the wall brackets be designed for model ships? Can you provide an image of the such a bracket?
Thanks! This is the one I found online which is discontinued:

Was looking for something simple that will do the job of keeping the boat on the wall.

This looks like a very good solution, very similar to the one I found online. Another alternative is this one:

But living in an apartment with no serious woodworking tools I am currently leaning more towards simply placing the original stand on a small floating shelf on the wall. Out of curiosity, Darivs, is this stand something you have created and if so, with what materials?

This one looks very strong and easy to install.

Not a hanger, obviously, since it requires a baseboard or a stand. Worth thinking about though as it’s simple and can look attractive.

Here's what I did with two of mine. The shelf came from Lowes.

I think these solutions will be the best one for me, I will post a picture once I have mounted the shelf.

I really like this one, I am guessing the wooden base is a regular base for this ship and then you added the steel rods and did you bend them this way? Unfortunately I dont have a proper wooden base for this Britannia yacht I just finished, it is merely some sticks put together, nothing to drill into:

I have read a lot about this dusting issue and this being my first build I have yet to run into this problem. I used a fast-drying glue on certain points of the ropes to keep them in place but never any wax. Of course I want to upgrade my techniques for the next projects and use something better for the rigging, but I might keep this one outside the display case and let it be an experiment in how much i can tolerate this dusting issue.

Thanks by the way, for all the replies and advice!

No, I have not created the stand that was shown in the pictures I posted. I made those pictures over the course of an hour just to answer the question in this thread. I used a free 3-D model off the internet and drew the mounts in Paint 3D, which comes with Microsoft Windows 10. I had to teach myself how to convert and import the ship model, then learn the drawing tools to create the shapes for the mounting brackets. When done, a few screen grabs were taken using this shortcut: WINDOWS KEY + SHIFT + S. I grabbed a couple pictures off the screen, and pasted each one into this forum message by pressing CTRL V. Dirt simple. You can grab and paste pieces of your screen like that easily, for example:
