Primer and paint

What’s a good wood primer to use on kit supplied wood? Is there a good/better/best paint manufacturer?
Are you thinking of keeping a naturalwood appearance, or painting over the primer with a color? There are several acrylic primers. I like the acrylic primer I boght from Model Expo. Other fnishes that perform well as a primer is de-waxed shellac and brushing lacquer. I have also used Watco Danish Oil first allowed to fully cure, then followed by lacquer or even spar urethane. Its best to try your selection on scrap first to see what you think....

Good primer for wood , Zinsler "Bullseye" --- airbrush acrylic over Bullseye - then clear coat to hole color used , won't fade over the years ... Take your time ....

I’ve used shellac but currently use Liquitex matte varnish as primer, then Vallejo Model Color acrylics. I always brush and get results equal to spraying (or better). Less prep, easy cleanup, vast array of authentic looking colors too.

Shellac can be pretty bullet proof.....EXCEPT! Alcohol! Alcohol will melt, thin, mar, destroy shellac. Use care....I haven't used Liquitex. Is it acrylic?

Hey Phil, yes Liquitex is water based low-odour acrylic. I use it as a finish, it's the best matte I've found, all others I've used have been nearer satin than matte.
Just been catching up on your 'Lady Pilar' build, I'm STILL on Le Superbe, so my 'Lady Pilar' is still a 'Lady - in- Waiting'!

Yes, it’s acrylic. I’ve used it by itself to finish cherry baseboards. Six coats —flattened after each coat with fine bronze wool until the grain is filled up. Then flattened one more time and applied furniture paste wax and buffed. A beautiful wax finish. I might use shellac again (amber or garnet) to darken a pale wood baseboard.

The original question was about using matte varnish as a primer. And people have used it successfully for that. Liquitex markets it as a finish coat to go on top of an acrylic painting. They do have a product that's used as a primer/filler under a painting called gesso. You might use that to give a stretched canvas a smooth surface. Gesso can be lightly sanded.

I use matte sheen polyurethane by MinWax. I prefer the water based version. I use this poly as a sealer as well as a finish coat. I have not experienced any difficulty painting over it with acrylics or using PVA and CA glues on the poly sealer. The only issue is if you want to stain the wood…my experience is to stain first then seal with the poly.
