Absolutely beautiful work!!Dear Friends. As you know Grant and I met up last night in Melkbosstrand, South Africa. Obviously, the HMS Victory was a major talking point and let me tell you - seeing her in the flesh is a totally different ballgame than seeing it on pictures. There is simply nothing that prepares you for the size and magnificence of this ship - especially when rigged to the extent that Grant has gone to. I am no photographer (as you all well know) but thought I would share with you my favorite views of the ship.

The last picture is, of course, Grant's infamous underwear pic so famously displayed. Ashtyn (Grant's daughter) had never noticed that before and upon me pointing it out, immediately declared that as "the coolest part of the build."

Good morning Roger. It was a beautiful Cape Town day and evening sort of fitting for the occasion, but no waves, calm as a lake. Next time Heinrich we can go for a paddleHello Heinrich, your joy at meeting up with Grant and especially having a close up view of his excellent build is reflected in your post and photos. You have done his Victory proud. I also previously missed the underwear picture so had a good chuckle.

Seeing these pics and the one of Heinrich and myself , never use gloss on the hull. It certainly reflects the light. Have you thought about painting the piece gold first, then giving it a coat of black and then, using a very fine grit sand paper, 600, 1000, etc., lightly sand the black off the raised surfaces? I have done this with name plates and it works very if you take your time and don't get to aggressive with the sandpaper.
Where to your find the 3d Parts? might they have them in 1/98 scale?
How did you create the thimbles (on the tackle in the lower center of the photo)?

Good morning. I bought these 3D parts from Shapeways. They do have 1:98 scale parts as well.
Good morning. Are you referring to the deadeye strop which holds the futtock shrouds. Refer to post #743 on page 38. Apologies my blogs jump all over the place as I hardly ever build in sequence just do those aspects I feel like doing when I wake up in the mornings. I shaped 0.6mm wire around the deadeye ran this down around a 0.5mm drill bit at the correct length , shaped with needle nose pliers and then back up. Where the join of the wire is I wrapped a 0.25 thread. The join of the wire is positioned inside the top so you don’t see the join. A tinny amount of CA glue was used to seal the wire and then painted black. The spaces in the top have to be reshaped to house the strop. Cheers Grant

I don't think so. Do you have a copy of Longridge's book? If so, see plan 9 (btwn pages 228 & 229). I was looking at the thimble in the Burton Pendant. I plan to put these on my cross section model even through there wont be running rigging to go through them. I want to install as much as may be practical on the yards and tops. I am also hoping that my rigging plan from the full model I built will help me with these as well. In 1/96, I am thinking about trying to take a 2mm dowel and use a fine file to cut a groove around the dowel every 2 mm or so. I would then cut off a 2mm-wide piece and drill a 0.5mm hole in the resulting disk creating a "thimble." If this doesn't work or hold up, I may just have to resort to making a loop using a. 0.5 mm drill bit.
