I did not know this topic before, just found it based on the b-wishes
I think historical and technical correct are the visible boltsheads - most of them, f.e. these for fixing planks and wales against the framing were flush with the plank.
but others, especially these which have to take forces like gun tackling, knees etc had slightly elevated boltheads (washers etc.)
