Thank you all for allowing me to join this group. I've recently taken up model boat building following retirement and thoroughly enjoying the hobby. My starter kit was the Mantua Mincio and have now just finished the Amati Fifie which was a great build and I'm very happy with the results. The one thing I've discovered is, however, I'm no sewer when it comes to sailmaking and my rigging skills are pretty woeful. With this in mind I feel my next project should be a ship of the non sail variety. I love the plank on frame design and don't want to go down the plastic hull route. My top three choices are currently the Occre Ulysses tug, Billings Nordkap or Smit Rotterdam. As a newbie I like clear instructions like Amati provided. Am I being too adventurous with my choices? I'd love to hear from you. Eric.

Welcome from Dorset. Don't be too timid about rigging! I built several models before I ventured into adding sails - just masts and yards but with all the stays and shrouds etc. I soon got better at reeving deadeyes and tying clove hitches. OcCre instructions are pretty clear and there are lots of useful tips on this excellent forum. Many OcCre kits also come with pre-stitched sails - I can't sew either. Have a browse through the Cornwall Model Boats website.

Thanks so much for your reply. I've dealt with Cornwall Model Boats on many occasions and love their quick, efficient service. My three options are in my 'Wishlist' on their site so will definitely be dealing with them. Perhaps I'll put my big brave pants on and have a look at the sailboat options on their site. Thanks again for the reply.

Glad to have you aboard. Two skills I have learned while rigging. Patience (which I have precious little) and Persistence. Good luck.

Thanks guys,
After a lot of consideration, and some good advice from Short John Bronze, I have decided the time has come to attempt a real ship. I've ordered the OcCre HMS Endeavour and await its arrival. I like the plank on plank design and I like the contours of the ship. Absolute novice when it comes to the rigging, but I've watched some videos and it looks like something I might enjoy. Given the right tutorials. So there we have it. A big adventure into the world of sail. Lets see what happens next.

Great choice! I like OcCre's instructions and their customer service has been excellent. I'm building their Endurance, and have built their Albatros. With some of their models, they include a link with video tutorials. I see that Endeavor does not have a set of tutorials, but Endurance does https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrPwa5r7zKUwk3r4vRc53SZjo9em5rZnM. These videos might help.

On the OcCre website there is an option to download the instructions for Endeavour if you fancy a preview of what you have let yourself into. The pdf is quite useful if you have a computer visible from your modelling bench.

Chilli Dog, have a Belhaven Scottish Ale while you’re working and everything will look easy!

Good choice. Am just completing my Endeavour after almost 3 years of build but I just fitted it in when I had time and was in no rush. Have thoroughly enjoyed the experience although rigging was a bit challenging due to incomplete instructions but plenty on advice ava from SOS forum. Good luck and enjoy. From a fellow Scot.

Hi HPeterB. Well the Endeavour has arrived and I'm filling my time reading the instructions and SOS tutorials so the Belhaven will have to wait a little while. Or perhaps I'll just end the evening with a wee dram. Cheers and thanks for your support.
