Model Shipways 1/8 scale "yellow box" USS Essex

Model Shipways has an admiralty style Essex in 1/76. It came out in 2015. Very little build activity on this kit on build logs.

The book, "The Frigate Essex Papers", by P.F. "Chad" Smith Is the accurate account of the "Essex". Make sure the plans , which were drawn by William Baker are included. There are copies available on eBay

A xerox machine is a principal tool in my ship modeling. I often build from plans found in books. Before getting into a debate about distortion, I have had good results. I also redraft the plans (by hand) myself so I can correct any problems. Scale can be easily changed in this manner.

With my Naval Architecture background, when it comes to hull shape I chuckle about many modelers concerns about ultimate accuracy. IMHO, there is probably no absolutely “accurate” hull shape for any model of a wooden hulled vessel. Every time hull lines are drawn for a ship, they must be “faired” to ensure that all intersecting points match in all three views without lumps or kinks in the lines. First, the Naval Architect draws the lines, then they are laid out on the mound loft floor, then the frames are dubbed by the shipbuilders during construction, if captured the lines are again drawn from digital information taken from the ship, and finally they are redrawn by whoever produces the model kit. Each time, fairing causes subtle changes in the shape of the hull. Therefore, by copying body plan sections for templates, and carefully carving the hull, your model should be as accurate as anyone else’s

Did you ever get the plans you are asking about? I have a set and several books let me know. I will mail the plans on Monday in a tube. They are mostly photo copies but very usable . I can send you prices in a private email.View attachment 441476View attachment 441477View attachment 441475View attachment 441478View attachment 441479
I would like to see the Model Shipways book by Jim Roberts. Anybody know where I could get one ? Again, the most authoratative book on the Essex is the Chad Smith book

Recently acquired a complete-less plans-Model Shipways 1/8 scale model of the USS Essex circa 1812. I have been able to get the Anatomy of the Ship book on the Essex, but cannot find any plans. This model came in two scales 1/8 and 5/32. Mark Mosko, of Model Expo suggested I try the forums to see if someone has, or can make a copy of the 1/8 scale plan, and instructions. Thanks all.
Hallo @palladian
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY

First, do NOT use the "anatomy" book, by Portia Takakjian as it is not accurate. Te book by Chad Smith "The Salem Frigate . . . " is the authorative reference onthe Essex. The Shipways model in the yellow box also missed the important details of the real ESSEX. If you could send me your email address, I can send you a PDF of the accurate model of the ESSEX. My email is waltzimmer@aol.com
