Purpose of hanging magazines

Hi y’all! I’m working on a Lego model of a frigate from the late 1700s or early 1800s. Originally thought I’d build the HMS Victory, but decided on something smaller with fewer gun decks.

My questions: How did the hanging magazines on ships like HMS Victory work, what was their role? What was the purpose of the floor extending below the orlop deck into the hold by a few feet?

Thanks for your help!

I've wondered this myself and the only idea I have is that it would be easier/faster to flood in case of a fire. But that's just a WAG.

I guess the reason for the hanging magazins were more to keep the important gub powder as dry as possible, so far away from the deep hold were bilge water was possible, but definitely under the waterline to not get a damage by a ball during action.
The Victory had three gun powder magazines
The main near the bow and two hanging - with this also the distance to the guns was as short as possible

I'm going to necro this thread with an answer, sorry guys in advance.

but

the hanging magazines were for passing ready made cartridges from the filling room (forward section of the main magazine) to the gun decks.

I doubt it would keep anything "extra dry", although in case of flooding it seems that if the main magazine was swamped, the cartridges in the hanging magazines would be dry up to a certain level.

I personally think it's just an ammo locker closer to the guns (like uwek said), but to store assembled cartridges, instead of loose powder and shot.

I agree, A main storeplace somewhere relatively safe, and two 'ready use' magazines close to the guns. The powder monkeys couldn't keep going up and down from the orlop in the heat of battle.
