Maiden Voyage

After spending hours cutting 1" pink foam to size, I have the beginnings of a ship design. Scale is still undetermined.

Here's the concept so far:

Is your pink stuff the fairly rigid foamed polystyrene or the softer material that you can almost mould with the pressure of your fingers? For what use is it manufactured?

Yes. I am using 1" thick pink insulation foam. It is a commonly used item in terrain building for wargaming which I was heavily a part of for many years until about 5 years ago.

Thank you for the compliment. The only drawback is I'm beginning to see the vessel within the sculpt and I'm impatiently getting the itch to begin the build. lol

Thanks. I'm familiar with it from making dioramas. It's handy when things transfer from one hobby to another.

So, I'm thinking I might go all in and do an open-side hull build to allow visibility of interior detail?

Why not? Your challenge will be to stick to the fantasy side of the equation. I mean, it's no use suddenly reverting to a true to scale interior, where everything is logical.

Great. Now for the "fun" part of shaping the hull. Time to get covered in pink foam scrapings.
The bottom deck is the double hull catamaran style.

I made a few slight modifications and added placeholders for the sails.

THe stern has a octagonal turret. I'm still designing it in my mind's eye.

THe black tape is non-skid tape.

I like the fore and sterncastles. Lots of scope for details there.

However, compared to your initial sketch the hull looks too chunky to me, like a big furry slipper. I can’t imagine it ever making headway.

I think it’s the bulge at the stern and the very blunt bow?

Yeah, you're right. The hull needs more attention.

This stuff is usually the firm, extruded kind and is used for insulation among other things like a model railroad layout table top.
