Ahoy mates. Captain J here. I am looking for some display ideas. I don't have a wood shop. Something classic not to complicatied. Is there such a thing. I have a build log going. I don't have a plan yet and before I get to much further, well better figure it out. Any help much appreciated.

Are you speaking about display cases? Dust and sun will destroy a model over time so a glass or Lucite case in an area out of direct sunlight is essential. If you cannot make one, do a search on line and you will find many sources that will make custom Lucite covers to the size you need.

Ha. I just found some shop in US making acrylic display cases. Here it is. It is even 1 foot short of what I need. This problem can’t be resolved for cheap.

Sorry for my Lack of information. I was looking for display of the ship itself. I am building the Black Pearl golden version 2021. The case for the ship will be another adventure. Drydock cribbing? I have seen the brass pedistils but not sure.

I feel safer making wooden stands on the base, but brass pedestals do look really good. For the base itself, one of my favorites starts with birch veneer plywood as it is clean and without blemishes. I love the burl pattern so have used the plywood and made a faux burl finish with paint. The edges are then capped with moldings painted black. I used the methods detailed in the following video.
One example that I did is below. The photo was of the model so not a lot of the base can be seen but it should give you an idea of the look. Just one of many choices for you.

Brass pedestals look great but when purchased from a model shop are expensive. I use brass bathroom pull cord handles via Ebay and cheap as chips (probably cheaper than a portion of chips - French Fries for those of you who don't reside in the UK). They come with a nylon washer you just need to pull off.

This pair cost about £4. They're notched for my current build of Victory Models (Amati) HMS Fly.

I have made my own display cases that are about 48" long, 12" wide and 24" high. I used wood for back and sides and acrylic for the front and top. That saved a lot of money and you can still observe almost every part of the build.

I have found that you can easily spend more on a case than you did on the model. That said I have put every ship in a case.
It is expensive “insurance” but will save your masterpiece for the future. Not only damage but dust is the enemy. I have a ship that I built 55 years ago and it still looks as good as it did when I completed her.

wouldnt glass be less expensive than plastic? i cant believe how expensive plastic has gotten over the years.

That's a fact. Since I made my last one a similar size would cost me treble the price. I am going to have to bite the bullet when I build one for my current build, but it's going to hurt. Earlier in the year I was kicking around making a glass top coffee table with a diorama underneath because I have some nice oak, but the cost of suitable safety glass blew my mind; I shall now look out for a second hand one and butcher it as necessary.

I found a large display case on Craigslist that will hold a number of models works really well...also solves the problem of models starting to accumulate around the house.
