ZEEHAEN 1639, 1:37.5, Dutch fluit from Dutch Explorer Abel J. Tasman by Marcus

Nice to see you back Marcus, or shall we call you Marco like Marco Polo. He was travelling a lot too. :)
When you start making yards and mast, maybe you take a look in the artikel I wrote for the Modelbouwer. Just click in the link of my signature "rejuvinating"

Stephan,
We figured that since we are now retired, we travel while we still can. After South Africa there is Hawaii, some more Asian countries, New Zealand and then the rest of the USA.

Thanks for the Mast and spars article.

It is good to see that you are back at work on the Fluyt, Marcus. Enjoy Cape Town!
Heinrich,
South Africa has been on my bucket list for decades.
That little crescent shaped piece of the Southern tip of South Africa called, Cape Flora Kingdom is one of the 6 unique plant kingdoms in the world.
About 70% of its flora is found nowhere else on the planet. As a retired Horticulturist/Plant & Soil Scientist I just have to see this before I die and the Botanical Garden, Kirstenbosch is the place to see some of these species.

Also interested in the Dutch history and the maritime museum.

Last year I started making rope and used Gutermann Mara 30, 70, 100, 120. I made lots of samples of various thicknesses.
Colors: Tan 854 & Tar 696. I will go through all the thicknesses, see what is used for what such as thickness for shrouds and start making more of it.
I am using the ropewalk from ModelExpo which I had to reinforce with various glues. I am ordering some of the same parts as the original so I can make another one.

In 2021 I purchased a Micromoter with handpiece (for carving) from Aliexpress. STRONG 210, 65W
I spent around $70.00. When I got the item and opened the box it had a European plug (asked for a US plug.
On the box it says 110V/220V. NOT true. The little switch is "just" a switch with no wires attached.
Quality Control is non-existent. So, I got scammed.
It is no use complaining or asking for money back.

I have checked the ones that are available on Amazon and some other on-line stores and they start at $250.00. I have practiced with my Dremel but it is bit heavy, even with the extension which looks like a snake. I will figure it out eventually.
I have a nice handpiece which looks good on the hobby table. :)

In my topic carving (see last link in my signature) I give a discription of an naildrill plus links to use.
And when you want to come to us, do it in september. Amsterdam and meet all the dutch builders.

Jimsky,
Thanks for the links. I will check it out but I am a bit leery about purchasing anything from China. Also, with the new administration I'm wondering if the tariffs are going to be high.
Marcus
I am not sure what tariffs you are referring to. I am buying endmills for my milling machine and I pay only what they advertise e.g. if the price is $3.45 and free shipping, this is what I pay (plus tax). Oftentimes orders are delivered even quicker than if I ordered domestically.

Thanks for the Links.
Will not come to the Netherlands this year. 2026 is a possibility. What is in September in Amsterdam? Modelship Show?

Thanks, I will seriously consider purchasing. The Micromotor I purchased was from AliExpress.

I know it's not the cheapest option, but IMHO, the absolute best option is the Foredom line of rotary motors. The handles are lathe turned aluminum and the bearings are Japanese. Drill bit runout tends to be laughably small, we're talking maybe half a thou. I also got the drill press attachment for really good drilling, though I think I need to make a small table for it. I'm not going to lie, it cost a pretty penny. But I have never regretted buying it. For what it's worth, I got the SR Bench Motor, the no. 30 handle, and the no 44t handle. I spent about $460.

In Amsterdam!

And about the drill, I have have mine Chineese already 4 years, and use it alldays when I build on my ship. I did have a real dentist drill with a powerful engine. I sold it. It uses more elektriciteit and it did do the same thing.
You see the carving work I do with it in buxus.

Thanks for the info. Bit pricey for me. I would not use it a lot as I built only Dutch 17 Century Merchant ships and these ships don't have a lot of ornamentation. I checked eBay and Amazon for Marathon Electric Micromotor (which I checked with what the Woodworkers club I belong to uses) and some of the guys use these machines. I was told they are from South Korea. There is one guy that creates song birds with his Micrometer.

I am going to give this some serious thought and don't have to order from China. I order non-motorized equipment from China, such as saw blades, drill-bits, chisels, etc.

I have got some bad news.

I have been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) symptoms in April of 2025. This disease is fatal & there is no cure. Some doctors say that you live 2 to 5 years but can also be 7 to 10 years. It all depends on good nutrition and continue to move around as much as possible. ALS is also known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’ My wife and I think it slowly started in 2023 and then in 2024 I could not open a plastic bottle and I fell here there, I was losing my balance.

I don’t have the “ALS gene”, but I do have all the symptoms. There are many variants and if you don’t have the gene, it is difficult to pin point which one it is.

In most cases, ALS patients do not typically experience significantly impaired sensory neural functioning, intellectual reasoning, vision or hearing and eye and bladder muscles.

Presently taking some meds that will slow down degeneration of the motor neurons by 25%. One of the positive signs of this disease is that there is NEVER any pain.

I still have fine motor skills in both of my hands but my right arm is now stronger than my left arm. I know I will not be able to finish my present built, the fluit, the Zeehaen. I have decided to keep on building and will be mostly to exercise my joints in my hands. Once I lose all my muscles in my hands and arms and the ship is not finished, I will give it a “Viking Funeral.”

If you have any questions, just PM me.

Regards,
Marcus
