French war-ship Fleuron 1729 - scale 1/72 - from Delacroix monograph

Hey Christian,

really a beautiful ship and you are building it really well. It looks really good.

Best regards

Günther Ship-1

The more I see of the French ships, the more interested I become in building one. Do you know if there are contemporary plans like the British have in their archives for English ships? I know there are some French captures in the RMG collections, but would love to find contemporary plans from French archival sources such as the Musee de la Marine in Paris if possible. (Any excuse for us to get back to Paris would be good) Thanks for sharing your build!

Hello boy,

Thanks for your post

I need to contact a friend who certainly knows the right answer to your question,
as soon as I receive their response, I'll send you a correct and usefull information

Regards,

Chris

@ Allan

My friend has soon sent his answer, he says that your request seems complicated. To obtain original plans, you have to contact the Service Historique de la Défense (SHD), which has several localisations :

VINCENNES
BREST
CHATELLERAULT
LORIENT
ROCHEFORT
CHERBOURG
TOULON

And the plans are only available for consultation on site, just like those at the National Maritime Museum, and not at Chaillot, but only in the Dugny (Le Bourget) storage rooms. And their shop doesn't sell plans

For best result, it's preferable to choose a precise ship before contacting the SHD, and to be patient, because the person which perhaps answers is generaly... much tired, never really reactive...

There are no collections in France that can be directly consulted online like those at the NMM Greenwich

So, there are two solutions :

1 - On the A.N.C.R.E. web french site, you can find monographs, many of which are now available in English and have been translated by Anthony Klouda (GB) or Gilles Korent (CAN), modelers who are well-versed in shipbuilding. Among these, is the "Bonhomme Richard" by John Paul Jones, a privateer, naval officer, and also... a well known french 64 guns war ship, named... le Fleuron

2 - Otherwise, there are the captures of plans. If a period is defined, my friend can scan a list of them, from the relevant volume of Rif Winfield's British Warships in the Age of Sail. Then, simply check the Greenwich website to see if they have the plans, which is often the case, since upon the arrival in England of captured French ships, which were sent to Deptford and analyzed from every angle, before being brought up to RN standards

If you are interested in a precise model from the "Musée de la Marine", my friend can ask directly the responsable person of the Documentary Resources department in the Collections department, if she has the original plan and if she can send a print for him

That's all, folks

Friendly,

Chris

My friend has soon sent his answer,
Merci bien Chris! You have been very helpful!

That is a shame to have so much information that cannot be easily disseminated. I will study the ships later that you listed and send you a PM if one of these is chosen. We will be on the Mediterranean coast of France in a few weeks but will not have any opportunity to get to Paris this trip. I wish that we could.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! Your reply is greatly appreciated!!!

For you and any member interested in a French ship, I looked through my old files and found drawings and the contract for La Couronne, detailed drawings of Royal Louis and a wealth of other information. I tried to attach it here but it is too large. If you or anyone here is interested in having this, please PM me with your email address and I will try to forward it that way.
