New kit from Occre 09/21/2025

Most definitely no ship was painted blue from the waterline above.
Most likely so

schönes Bild. Entschuldigen Sie bitte, ich meinte die Bemalung am Heck sowie Steuerbord und Backbord und dem Vorschiff. Ich sehe dort immer Symbole aus der römischen und griechischen Mythologie und Fabelwesen.
Hi, Gunther! I understand! This question is very interesting, but it requires a long, detailed answer. I have some materials on the issue at hand. To avoid cluttering this thread, I'll be eagerly awaiting your thread on building the model, and I'll be happy to help!

P.S. I know German at school and college level. ;)

Hi:) I am truly grateful that you had the patience of doing all that translation work; I have download a copy for myself:)
I hope it didn't oversaturate you :))))))

Well, there are certainly sources that can prove that the Soleil Royal was painted in the colour blue.

Yes, I didn't say it wasn't. I said it wasn't painted from the waterline, like in some drawing you posted, or like AL model is painted.

I looked it over and am 90% done with the OcCre HMS Victory Shipyard that came out last year. It looks to me that a huge percentage of the parts are just copied from the Victory Kit.
I built a Soleil 4 year ago from the now defunct Model Space here in the US. I thought it was an excellent kit. I have to admit I did move the water line because I thought the wood used in the kit was excellent.

Thank you. As I get older I try more and more to make quality builds. Watching all the other folks build ships gives me a lot of information to try to incorporate into other builds.
I am currently building the OcCre Victory shipyard version. I then plan to build the AL Victory anatomy of and after that the Caldercraft Victory. Should provide quality info on differences in the kits.

Hi; The main reason why the SR rebuilt was not painted entirely blue was because of the cost involved in the making of making that color; even if it would have been of the cheaper of the two blues, one being a mix of sulfur and copper dioxide, the other, even more expensive being the crushing into fine powder of azurite and-or blue lapis. In a ruling from the king in around 1686, no one was to use any blue on ships, because of the cost, with some exceptions for the royal symbols, and sparse use on the royal ships...
The cheaper blue would have been used on the rebuilt Soleil Royal for some of the upper rear work on the sides of the hull, and at places on the stern, combined with occre red; the red was much cheaper being issued mainly from iron oxides and was the primary color of the french military ships starting around 1686, right after the king's ruling; and all the colors other than occre yellow were restricted to the upper hull works and the sterns. In rare cases, white was used to paint the hulls as it had some level of hull protection, and I'm not talking about the goowy whitish/greenish/briownish cstuff on the lower hull. It is misrepresented in ship models as being pure white, but it wasn't; it was whitish only
As for the later ships ( post 1720 apprx) the discovery of ''prussia blue'', the same stuff used today, became the prominent color used on french ship......
I hope this ansers your inquiry about the blue color:)

It is. When fragments of Soleil were recovered from its wreck site after it was sunk, some of the ship's remains and timbers revealed trace of blue pigment. These finds have provided a limited amount of physical evidence about this appearance, as much of the structure had deteriorated over time.
Hi Kuba,

Do you have a link to more information on SR’s wreck recovery site?

Hi Kuba,

Hi. There are plenty of articles. In documents there are many sub links and references to place of discovery and other articles.

On government website, names of missions or recovery expeditions and other links. Just click, and translate.

So fanboys of OcCre started to recive this kit
so far saw about 4 diffrent orders ...
Best part is that, one of yyyy, woof woof, idk how to name it corectly... made this model x years ago from Deagostini, and now he's going to make it again because he's being petted like a puppy. The SAME model, second time. Hypocrisy. Shocking.
