Scratch 1/64 STERLYAD Russ. Gunboat 1855

A total of 75 gunboats were built. The Sterlet and the Sturgeon were prototypes. The sterlet did not go into production. The overall design was developed on the basis of the Sturgeon boat (I.A. Shestakov). All gunboats differed markedly in design depending on the shipyard, the time of laying, and the project.I made drawings for gunboats of the Brownie type. This is the last series (33 pieces). It is better to make a model based on these drawings (Are you sure you want to build this?).

Here the British HMS GRINDER in a fight in 1855 the rigg looked "chopped" to lower the point of gravity?
As I ready today, the STERLYAD hin boats were the exchange for the blocked boats ordered in GB in 1851. As the blockade made a plenty of workers around St.Petersburg unemployed they were trained to do a job in an ironwork or foundry. So the steam engine's were constructed as simple as possible, the boilers we're made close to locomotive boilers and so there was a homemade steam and sail gunboat ready to run.
As well the engine's and boilers did their job better than the Napier ones, the hull was made from undryed wood and so after only ten years the hull's were rotten.

The gunboats were able to travel in very shallow waters of the eastern Baltica sea and by this kept the Anglo-French blockade successfully away from St.Petersburg and the Czar Nicolas I. founded an enlarged heavy industry around his capital - due to the obvious danger the gouverment was moved deep into Russia to Moscow some years later.
The last gunboat (Shield) was decommissioned in 1892. It served as a barracks until 1910. Then disassembled. The rest of the gunboats served for 25... 30 years.

Hello Dart,

so when I got you right, the STERLYAD was only built as a prototype but never any row followed - so sehe stayed a single ship or better a one ship class?

Are you sure you want to build this?

That is a very good question!
I do like her simple superstructure - not any pomp and circumstances. Also her greyish metal zinc plating in the underwater part looks interestingly different from all the typical copper.

The drawings in the kit do give very good ideas of the rigging and the guns' pivots.

So she will be a kind of a trial towards the original STERLYAD from 1855? Yes and I do admit, I really love her three master rigging.

Is your "Brownie" gunboat an early relative of this gun boat type?

Yes. This is a single instance. It was considered not very successful and was not put into mass production.

But she is one of the rare three masted steam boats I do know and I do see her as a real beauty with her elegant rigg and slim lines.

B.t.w. the STERLYAD was equipped with massive muzzle loaders I do have got plans for:

Quite detailled drawings, too:

And I do admit I really do like her stem's lines:

I do know there will be some drunken wizard's tricks be needed to find some solutions.

All these drawings do not correspond to reality. It's a fantasy.Compare it with the real drawing. Sails without a topsail
The artillery was repeatedly changed. Every navigation. Both by type and quantity. This is one of the private options.Think before you build. It would be a pity to spend a lot of effort for the sake of a historically incorrect model.

Thanks you very much for your interesting advice. That's looking a lot different towards the planset, Dart, you are very right.

So ist there a moment of her being that is properly documented and we can say: "That's what she looked like on this very specific day!" in her career?
My idea was to place her beside the 1900 torpedo boat STERLYAD to show the technical progress in 45 years development.

So I am forced to dig deeper...
...or have to build her as an "As she should have looked like" as originally planed?

Thank you very much.

I worked a bit onto the "sourroundings" the stand - so I combined the "best of sterlet" into one figure:
the long tail
the teeths in the backbone
and the Seahorse like head
