Hello Gurus and fellow Modelers!

I am almost done building Occre Santisima Trinidad, it is a big ship!
Started thinking and investigating about a display case, Not happy with what I see! Looks like this has to be a special order and dont know where to order and what to do, reaching out for help.

5 sided Plexiglass will cost about $1500-$2000 and I need a base for it and they weigh about 100lbs! So not easy to move or lift. Building it will not be as easy as well, I need to buy many tools, never done something like this, I am kinda stuck.

dimensions of the model: 1060 mm by 415 mm by 876 mm

Would you order a 5 sided Plexiglass? Would you build a frame and do it yourself and have 5 plexiglass pieces fit into frame? would you use glass instead of Plexiglass? Any help will be greatly appreciated and I do need some lights inside the display case as well.

Thanks!
Sam

If you choose glass, beware off the weight:
1 plate of 1060 x 876 of 3 mm = 6,96 kg
Here is a Glass Weight Calculator

I perfectly understand your problem as I will have to build a display case for same size of model. For myself for now I decided to build it cheap per attached video.

I checked that some shelving sold in home depot is exactly what I will need.

All of my models reside in wood framed glass cases of my own design and construction. The glass is ordinary single strength glass cut to size by my local hardware store. Single strength glass fits nicely in the kerf made by a table saw blade. The oldest case is about 45 years old and the model is still in like new condition. The glass that I use is not expensive here in the USA. I have never built a model like a fully rigged sailing warship that would require a huge case.

As I get older and less sure footed safety becomes a concern. It is possible that the model that I am currently building will be displayed in a public space. If so, I would try to use some sort of safety glass. Plexiglass, acrylic plastic, etc. might be a necessary but in my opinion poor second choice.
