Time marker starting about 2:19-------Where did they come up with the decorations on the eking rail, head rail and lower rail? I cannot find anything like this on the 1737, 1765, or 1803 versions of Victory in any contemporary drawings, paintings, or models.

Hello, Allan.

Are not you the author of the articles published in US Naval Institute magazine?

Just was looking on sails information and found an article signed very similar to your SoS ID name.

"... an unrivalled masterpiece that stands as the most realistic representation of the legendary HMS Victory, according to the English Royal Navy." Nobody better argue with the "English Royal Navy" about how accurate a model it is of their ship!

This kit has everything you could possibly expect for $1,808.00 USD plus tax, shipping, and handling. (I expect opened and partially started editions will soon be available for much less on eBay.) This is OcCre's "limited and numbered edition" of only 999 kits and guess what? It's sold out! That's $1,778,200.00 USD gross to Medi-OcCre's coffers from the pockets of unsophisticated kit builders. (P.T. Barnum was right! But what they don't know won't hurt them.) I'm sure "... owning this model places you in an elite group of enthusiasts." and that's what ship model kits are all about, isn't it?

Check out the detail on those belaying pins and the scale gratings!

Do I detect an element of sarcasm?

It is great if you can afford the Kit, whether one can build it or not
is up to the buyer , also if still avaiable , and you must have it, buy
it and good luck with the build.

Insane pricing aside, I think this is another example of differences in builder desires. Some live for historical accuracy. Some just like to make interesting models. I hate to admit it, but I assuredly fit into that second category.

But for me, what I find most upsetting about this model is the combination of extremely high pricing and substandard components. It's like you're bending over to take it from two attack fronts. They make some decent kits, but this assuredly isn't one of them.

All that said, I'm willing to speculate that a lot of the purchases were made by speculators who will later attempt to resell them at scalper mark-up prices. You see this all the time with LEGO kits. There are always those who want to take advantage of collectors, and shockingly, the Internet appears to be full of predators without scruples.

End of rant...

None whatsoever. That's a verbatim quote from OcCre's advertising copy.

I think part of the issue is that most kit builders think that the kit manufacturer has done all the research and has presented a good representation of the historical vessel, so they build it as the kit. Or, they buy the kit and don't want to do any research. Another possibility is that they buy a kit and don't have the knowledge that things are not accurate in the kit.

"I hate to admit it, but I assuredly fit into that second category." Why? That's just as valid reason to build a model as any other.
PS by careful with Lego. If a kit has really gone up in the collectors' market they sometimes re-issue it

After you've replaced the timber, the rigging line and the fittings it'll be a pricey build!
