NHI Kolibri N-3, scale 1:48, scratch build

Dear Johan. I know how special this build was for you and I also understand the trash-can frustration - models that you WANT to get right because of their significance to you, are also sometimes the ones that cause the most frustration and heartache. I am very happy for you that you completed the build and that you are happy with it. I think that @Dean62 Dean summed it up well - by all means go for the realism and intricate details, but up to the point where it is no longer feasible. The trick is to know where to draw that fine line. Personally, I think it looks superb and urge you to be very proud of it.

CONGRATIOLATION with this result of this phenomenal model, Johan. It's a one of a kind unique model. You can be very proud of this result.
It was a true pleasure to be able to brainstorm with you about possibilities during your build.
And a big 'hooray' for your wife for preventing a dive into the trash can.:)
Regards, Peter
Thanks Peter, this most definitely was a demanding journey with a for me surprisingly good result.
Also a big thanks for thinking about possible solutions and offering help in different ways.
Ellen put me on this path for this model while I was finishing my Fokker Spin build and kept me on the straight and level, thus avoiding a premature crash on the scrapyard.
I think it looks fantastic Johan! Great job and congratulations on your completion, which I know didn’t come easy.
I think we have to be aware that models are a representation of the real thing. Of course the more detail, the more convincing it looks. But at the end of the day we have to keep our goals and expectations realistic or we will definitely become defeated and unhappy. So that said, I think you put sufficient detail at scale for it to be an excellent representation of the real thing! Excellent model! ;)
Thanks for your kind words, Dean, they are appreciated.
I set off on this journey with rather high expectations, yet I had to gradually adjust them to more realistic ones.
It has been mentioned before, only a happy few will be able to pinpoint the flaws and deviations, but the model is still rather convincing.
Outstanding, Johan! A work of great precision and passion. I'm happy for you!
Thanks so much Paul, high praise from an accomplished modeller!
What a fine-looking scratch build Johan! Congratulations, and am sooo glad you stuck with it.
Thank you Dan, in the end I'm glad as well that I set aside my misgivings and listened to Ellen.
Scratch building became to me the true modelling challenge.
Johan, my dear friend
you have done wonderful work, it was great pleasure to follow you
Thanks Shota, it's appreciated and thanks for your assistance of getting me in touch with Avi, that was a true gift.
Good morning Johan. Bravo!! I have huge admiration for you guys who can bring in so much fine detail onto such small models. (You and Peter….must be a Dutch thing ;) ). Congratulations on this scratch Kolibri- perseverance certainly pays off. Cheers Grant
Hello Grant, I feel rather humbled by your admiration and your praise. Naming me and Peter in the same sentence, wow, now you're putting a lot of weight on my shoulders... And thanks for you congratulations.

Hello my dear friend, this was indeed a very special and significant build for me, one of the reasons why I wanted this build to be perfect, or at least as best as I could get it.
You know of my hesitations before I ordered and started building the Bluenose; I highly doubted whether I would be able to pull that POF build. As the build progressed, I added quite a bit of scratch build parts to the Bluenose, the lights and sails being among the more noteworthy ones. I have to blame a few accomplished builders on this forum for that...
After the Bluenose, scratch building became more natural in the sense that "if there's no kit, I'll make it myself". That led to the build of the Fokker Spin, followed by the NHI H-3 Kolibrie. For neither model a (suitable) kit was available.
A well known Dutch musicion, Louis van Dijk, was quite famous for his improvisations. He once said: "Improvisation is the art of omission". I think he was right and I am convinced it als applies to modelling. One only has to know what to omit, though one can be horribly mistaken by omitting the wrong details.
Thanks for your warm words and rest assured I am very proud of the end result.
