I will go ahead and ask this:
Is there a source book - a Dover book or something similar with a series of the images used in the friezes, relief carvings and full figure carvings that was originally printed in the 18thC. ? Most of the time I have a difficult time deciphering what is trying to be shown. Some seem to be contemporary martial and some from Greece and Rome of antiquity.

Hi Paul, Do you have any that you can post? The Fly drawings are great, but if you have others, that would be super. David does refer to the Fly drawing and even states that leaving off the painting altogether is an option. There is a contemporary model at RMG of Atalanta 1775 that may also be helpful although the views are not so easy to use to discern that actual painting on the stern.

Are we talking about the frieze along the side of the ship or the painting on the stern? I assumed we were talking about the frieze running along the side.

In any case, it seems I overstated my case, Allan. I just went back and looked and realize my collection of images cannot be verified for subject and date...
