Hey Guys,

A while ago I found a really nice tutorial on this site for using a rope serving tool to make strops for blocks. I thought I bookmarked it but whoops. He used two hooks on the machine for the length of the strop. He served it to make a tight loop on one side and a longer unserved area on the other. Then he took it off and made a tidy simulated splice by tying the loose end through the tight loop.

Anyone remember this or the member that posted it? I tried a bunch of things with advanced search but didn't have any luck.

Thanks in advance!

Why yes it is! Thanks Y.T. Is the Domonov server necessary or just convenient. I'm thinking I could go on a scavenger hunt for that nice hardware you have as hooks.

I appreciate you taking the time to post. I've been building POF models; more complicated wood working but I've largely avoided complex rigging. I'm going to try the rigging now with a POB and have always found some of the great, realistic techniques on the site inspiring. Your how-to is very helpful. I've tried my hand at splicing at that size. I can do it but it's a bit messy and not practical for that many strops. This seems doable. With practice. Lots of practice.

Thanks again!

After initial serving, before removing the strip off the hooks I would recommend to brush the strip with some 50% diluted PVA or acrylic medium also diluted to 50%. This would ensure that the served yarn would not displace. I also would recommend as serving rope to use very thin yarn or the thinnest thread. You can find these depends on the scale you’re working with.

Thanks Y.T. I've had some luck with fast-setting hobby white glue, it's fast and rubbery. Too rubbery for wood, nice rubbery for ropes.
