Good afternoon everyone. I let Ricochet Rabbit out to play a bit and decided to make the Breast rail and hammock cranes.

As with the main pump bits/stanchions on the gun deck, the stanchions for this breast rail where covered in char.

I don’t attempt to remove all the char as this changes the shape and scale of the stanchions- they are a bit dirty but fits my look and feel.


The Hammock cranes I scratch made from 2mm brass tubing and 0.8mm wire with some of “Grants” soldering .


Oiled with boiled Linseed.

That’s a fair bit of char on those stanchions but they turned out ok. Frigging char is a nuisance but part of the kit model construction processes nowadays.

That’s a very nice outcome considering you’re using charcoal. Soldering looks perfect - turns out “Grant’s” soldering is the new standard.

"Grants"-soldering skill are becoming better en better. Those hammock cranes look great. And about the use of boiled linseed oil ...... you know what I always used, Grant.

Hi Grant, just catching up after holidays. Really nice work, nothing wrong with your soldering! I agree with the other comments, how many Watts are they using in the laser cutter? That charring is almost charcoal!

Good morning Roger. Normally I don’t mind removing Char, however this kit has not given much leeway on the parts- they are pretty much to scale with the char on. I’m not criticising the kit as they paint these stanchions. I’m happy with my outcome so all is good .

Hello Paul. That charcoal was interesting to get to the wood without messing with the shape and scale. If I had some skills I would have scratch made these……hmmm. You are too kind re my soldering .
Thank you for the compliment even though I have a long way to go with this. That being said I am pretty happy with these hammock cranes.

Good morning Peter and thank you kindly. I’m definitely improving and I quite enjoy playing with little brass pieces and putting them to the flame. I love the richness linseed brings out - dust is the evil which it likes to attract tho.

Good morning. Arlene and I went to visit my Mom in Durban this week. Man I hope I have plenty of her genes as at 85 she is as active as my ricochet rabbit.

I had yesterday free so I worked on my catheads and laid some more deck planks. The catheads were a mission to get right and plenty angles and cutting these with a handsaw……Eish.




I thought I should see if my masts fit…..should have done this as I went so I had some en trepidation…..they are not spot on re the rake, however close enough for me to adjust if I am going to include these.

I don’t show enough Pics of my whole ships progress so here goes :

PS : the deck beam layout of the kit is incorrect so when I made the corrections to the catheads and some of the gratings etc some Grants adjustments had to be incorporated .

The catheads are nicely installed, Grant. And for the rest: a decent model needs from time to time a re-do or adjustment. So, no problems at all!

Grant, From the days gone by, when I as a little boy with the school marched 5 miles to Eden Park sat cross legged near the sideline in the pouring rain to watch the AB's with the great Don Clark play the Springboks there is one thing I say. Here in NZ the greatest revalry in rugby has, and will, always be between our two nations. Losing to Aust is bad enough and grrrrr, but losing to the Springboks is an unforgiveable national rugby disaster. In some respects winning against the Sprinboks can almost be defined as being of greater importance than winning the world cup. Soweto will be interesting, sure Ill be up with pots of coffee watching. judging by our sport investigative journalism you guys will need to pull up socks. Cheers Grant. BTW, I live very close to an Airbase so judging by the way they fly those Lockheed C-130J Hercules aircraft it wouldnt surprise me if an NZ pilot flew that plane so low to terrorised the spectators. LMAO!

It is a very very sad day down here. The great Kiwi flightless bird has been knee capped. Congratulations Spingboks well fought and won. The greatest rugby rivalry is very much alive and ongoing. I now retire to our mourning (or moaning ) cheers.

I absolutely love the respect shown by all the players, the Haka, the brutality and of course the AB line breaks and open play skills. The friendship between Siya and Ardie is also amazing. I added the last light (window) to the stern gallery and fitted the pilasters (the white bone decorative pillars). Cut some glass for the window.
