Interesting, thank you KurtI understand that the Mantua/Sergal instructions have you make yards which have octagonal portions at the center, but I believe this feature really was used starting with late 17th century vessels, and not one as early as the Sovereign, unless they were added as part of the refits made to the vessel after construction. The Lely painting has enough detail to show the yards as being round in cross section along the entire length of each yard.
