Hello from Rhode Island!

I have never built a model ship but am familiar with balsa planes. I always wanted to build a model ship, but never committed. Recently I found a kit for the Emma C. Berry by Model Shipways on Facebook Marketplace. I really liked that this model had the exposed siding and drydock diorama setting. I also liked that it was only $30! This was too nice of a kit for me not to try this hobby.

Buying this second hand it appears there are a few missing pieces but otherwise all there. The only pieces missing was for the supporting structure that the ship is built upon. Luckily I was able to design and 3D print replacement parts by measuring the spaces the parts used to be and recreating in Fusion360.

I am now ready to start construction from where the previous owner left off but have lots of questions! Not really sure the right forum or place for me to post progress, log info, ask questions, etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome aboard from neighboring Massachusetts! I bought an Emma C. Berry kit on Ebay but haven't started her yet. A build log is the best way to ask questions and get help with your model. I've built three Model Shipways kits, and am currently working on my fourth. The instructions can sometimes seem a little vague at first glance, but if you parse them line-by-line and study the pictures you'll be fine. Good luck and enjoy your new hobby! It is wonderful.

First, WELCOME aboard.
You obviously have talent to do this kind of thing. I hope you will start a build log of your model and if you have any questions along the way, please do ask.

Welcome to SoS! I am building Emma C. Berry in the next few months, so will follow your build log should you decide to build her. I love that diorama with the exposed planking and the boat propped up for maintenance.

If you ever want to see how to fabricate diorama features (sea floor, seaweed and sea grasses, and fish / crabs) you should check out Ed Thieler's work. He is an older modeler and retired heart surgeon who was associated with Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. His work mainly focuses on Chesapeake Bay watercraft with Howard I. Chapelle connections / drawings.
