1/60 Serapis 1779

Will the hull be double planked? The reason I ask is that the breadth of each strake now on the model is the same its entire length rather than being reduced along the hull as was done on the ship. It is hard to explain in words, but if you look at a few contemporary planking expansion drawings you can see the breadth is only about half at the rabbet of the stem compared to midships. For some examples of both inboard and outboard planking..... https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/search/planking expansion

Edge bending planks on the hull causes lift as well. It is easier to prebend around a jig to get the proper curvature and treated with heat and then once shaped it can be held with finger pressure for a minute or less for PVA glue to hold, less for CA glue. Pins are absolutely unnecessary if the planks are pre-shaped.

WOOW ! You have made it painfully clear , that we use very different techniques to build our models. Please don't post on my thread again.

@Frederick wilhelm,
While everyone has their own preferred way of building, the spirit of our forum is all about sharing knowledge and learning from one another. I’m sure Alan didn’t mean any offense; he was simply offering insight based on his own experience. If his suggestions don’t fit your approach, feel free to take what’s useful and continue building in the way that suits you best.

I am impressed with your initiative and progress. I too am working on Aeropiccola Serapis, both 1779, and 1782. One is scratch built, as I am installing a functional lower gundeck on Serapis 1779. And I am only using some of the kit wood, on both. There is a variety of woods that I use.

Hi, I am interested in how you made so nice sails on the completed ship in your first post. What is the material? Did you make the reef lines on these sails? Would you be so kind to elaborate? Below is an image of what I mean.

Billing Boats norske love -- preprinted sails are supplied in the kit , you just have to sow them.
