1/60 Serapis 1779

Looking good. I had a great time building this ship over a period of 35 years in a 1:48 scale.

Hope to see more updates on your build.

Hi Frederick

Is your model supposed to be the Serapis 1779 which fought the Bonhomme Richard or is it the Serapis 1782? There are contemporary drawings of Serapis 1779 and Serapis 1782 at RMG Collections. Looking at photos of finished models of this kit if it supposed to be the ship that fought the Bonhomme Richard it looks nothing like the actual ship. Based on the kit model photos they forgot a second tier of lights (windows) on the galleries and stern so it looks like Serapis 1782 rather than the more famous one. Also the QD did not have any gun ports when she was built and the stern carvings I have seen in at least one build log are from the 1782 ship, not the 1779 ship. I suspect the kit maker might have used both sets of drawings and came up with their own Disney like version.

https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-81924 the written description is:

Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the body plan, sheer lines, and longitudinal half-breadth proposed (and approved) for Ulysses (1779), and later in 1778 for Endymion (1779) and Serapis (1779), all 44-gun Fifth Rate, two-deckers. All three ships were built with two-tiers of windows.

Interestingly the painting by William Elliot in 1789 appears to have use the Serapis 1782 as the subject.
