Newbie On Board

Welcome onboard, best forum around.

Use the search function and list kit name and see what others have done with the same kit, it may help you with questions you come upon.

I did the Phantom, solid hull as first kit, and don't think I will ever do a solid hull again.

Yeah, the solid hull was definitely not my first choice but it was free. Once complete, I plan to move to the shipwright series of boats.

I have started those for fun, and to help with basic skills, I like the small simple builds.

Please start a build log on your current work, so others can follow along and if you need help, these fine folks will always offer there help or opinions!

Hello everyone! I am completely new to model ship building. I have wanted to enter this hobby for quite a while but never prioritized it until now. I am attempting my first build with a gifted Constructo Bluenose II 1:135. This is a solid hull model so it shouldn't be too dificult but the instructions leave something to be desired.
Welcom to this SoS forum, Joe. It’s nice to read that you will start a Bluenose build of Constructo.
Here is a link of another —> Constructo BN build <— of Dave Teel. As far as a know the only other Constructo.
As new to model ship building is my advice to start a build-log. Because it’s a kind of unique version, you can post your progress and also ask your questions. For sure you will get a answer soon.
And I will ad you build-log to this —> BN-list in post #1 <—.
Regards, Peter

Welcome to SoS. Your decision to switch to the shipwright series after completing this one is a good one. Afterwards, having done a solid hull and framed hull you can decide which suits you best. As Peter suggested maybe post some photos via a build log and if you want help, let the readers know you are open to receiving suggestions, questions, etc.

El Capitan,

Welcome to the forum! You’ve picked just about the perfect model to start this hobby. I’m sure you’ll make great progress and before long be building more—and bigger—projects.

Glad to have you here!

Hi, I’m a newbie too. I’m building the Thames Berge (circa 1925) called “Will Everard” the instructions suck abit; no mention at all about the installation nod the hull bottom pieces at all. It didn’t take long to work it out. I hope to build my skill sets with this build before tackling the Endeavour.

Peter:
Hey buddy, welcome to the forum.
About the building instructions:

First, many kits (especially from traditional brands) assume a certain level of experience. Companies like Artesania Latina or Mantua Model often expect builders to already understand basic techniques—planking, rigging, fairing bulkheads—so they don’t spell out every step. What feels like “missing information” is sometimes treated as “common knowledge” in the hobby.

Another big factor is translation. Many kits are originally written in Italian, Spanish, or Polish, then translated into English. In that process, detail and clarity often get lost. So instead of a precise step-by-step, you get something vague like “assemble as shown.”

At the moment, I’m building the Juanita Stern Wheeler, and this kit doesn’t come with proper instructions—just a few basic computer-generated pictures, and they’re not even organized step by step.

This kit really forces you to sharpen your skills.
