Le Gros Ventre 1/36th Scale - Monograph by GDelarcoix

Good morning group - and welcome the rebirth of this build log !

I paused this build back in 2022 out of frustration after failing at the hawse timbers several times. I stored all of the frames and parts and a few years later I began La Renommee in 1/48th as many of you know who have followed my build log. After completing the frame, I wanted to start another build to apply some of the skills I picked up framing La Renommee.

Rather than starting a new build I decided to relook at some of the work completed on the LGV and decided to once again attempt the hawse timbers - which were also not to my satisfaction on La Renommee.

Here are the results. Maybe its experience or the larger scale, but this time I was successful. I have also added a photo of both assemblies, stern and bow side by side as they both were extremely challenging from me to complete.

I am going to proceed with framing the LGV - I am really enjoying the larger scale and all of the frames and keel along with the build board were already completed several years ago.

This one will look very different than La Renommee, not only in scale, but also approach. Right now my plan is to build it entirely in pear, with no dye or paint - the "Belgian school" of admiralty modeling.

Thanks Paul ! Its going to be hard to go back to 1/48 - the larger scale is so much more enjoyable. However I'll worry about that next year when I restart La Renommee.

The Frustration you had, I know quite well. I had always the same problem with the after deadwood. Now I found a solution, which works for me and it makes fun to reach the next steps.

Progress continues, the first 7 frames have been faired and placed in the site as I continue adding all of the biases to the remaining frames. You can really see how much larger this ship is going to be in 1/36 than La Renommee. The lines are completely different as you can see how wide the bow is in comparison to the frigate.

This time I am leaving less fat on the frames and sanding them more to spec which hopefully lessons the amount of sanding and scraping later.

Another masterpiece beginning...leaving an unfinished opus.

Your hulls are beautiful and superbly constructed. Thanks for sharing such great photos.

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads. Update - I continue to add the frames after adding the biases and sanding them to within .5mm of the plans. I whole heartedly recommend this ship to anyone considering their first Ancre build. The plans are accurate and the structure (other than the hawse timbers) is very approachable, especially in the larger scale of 1/36.

The first 25 frames or so look pretty good - these were the last ones built a few years ago. Frames 25-49 however are showing errors which makes sense - they were the first I ever assembled so at least half will have to be discarded and replaced. I can build an accurate frame in an hour - the biggest pain is copying the plans at Office Depot.

Its better to catch these now than later when they are installed and hope you can sand away the errors.
