Cazador Xebec 1750 - OcCre - scale 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Construction of the yards. Hi guys, This weekend I started to construct the yards. 3 to be exact. Each yard consist out of two parts tapered to the end. When bound together a strong but flexible yard is the result so it won't break in the wind. This is what I want to simulate, so I want to...

LE ROCHEFORT - Harbour yacht from 1787 1:36 by Tobias (Monograph by ANCRE)

So you use the Ballistol to blacken the brass bolts after inserting them into the wood and the Birchwood Casey if you have single parts which needs to be blackened. Thank you very much :)

LE ROCHEFORT - Harbour yacht from 1787 1:36 by Tobias (Monograph by ANCRE)

Hi Dieter, I use Ballistol to blacken the wood, everything else is treated with black brass. Ballistol doesn't bleed into the wood and after treatment I dab it off with a damp cloth.

HMS GRANADO - full hull - POF kit by CAF in 1:48 - by Uwe

After counting the number of nails and drilled holes, let us come back to the real work on the model The doors included in the kit have this window cross but I guess the sleeping room of the captain and also the entrance door to the main cabinet was different - I think such a louvre or...

Fair American 1:48 Model Shipways Retrospective Log and Personal Modeling History

About the guns. I can't remember whether my first FA kit had brass or Britannia metal guns. I do remember painting them as well as all of the other kit supplied metal fittings. You already know that the paint gets so thick that it obscures detail. Constructo's Enterprise had brass guns and...

    Brass Blackening

Casey's Brass Black is a super product. Preparation of the brass is crucial. Once out of your acetone bath the pieces should not be handled with the human hand. Otherwise oils from our skin will cause issues. I use a 1:10 ratio of Brass Black:Water. As expected it takes quite a bit longer...

    HMS EURYALUS - 36 GUN 1:48 SCALE

A little more headway on EURYALUS this weekend. While waiting for the rising wood assembly to glue to the keel, I decided to go off course a little and steered toward making the rudder. Nothing unusually difficult in this and a nice mixed wood/brass component. Tapering the rudder stock was...

HMS Fly Build (Amati) 1:64 by Nomad

Before continuing work on the main and upper decks I turned my attention to the Fly's sixteen guns and carriages, some of which will need to be installed fore and aft on the gun deck before those areas are made inaccessible by the upper decks. To this end, Amati supplies a set of rather ungainly...

    Nikitin San Bartolome 1584 A.D. (Kit #35)

I think I have Tennis elbow from sanding off the char on all those little pieces. Now I have to do a bit of research and learn some new skills. #1) How to blacken the Brass cannons and carriage straps. #2) How to use an airbrush. Jan

    Blotchy Blackening

I have used both Birchwood and Jax products. The ones intended for brass are both chemically the same so the results shouldn't vary. The only difference will be the strength of the chemical. I find JAX very quick to react compared to Birchwoods so it's obviously a stronger solution. The...

    Blotchy Blackening

Hi, interesting discussion. If you would like a chemical explanation: plastic coated copper wire has been treated with an antioxidant/brightening chemical which stops the surface of the copper oxidising and turning black during the manufacturing process. That is why when you strip back...

    Blotchy Blackening

My understanding of blackening is that copper / brass parts must be ideally clean in order for blackening solution to do a good job. Parts with uneven blackening are ALWAYS not enough cleaned parts. I had a bigger problem in the past when I used different blackening solution. Parts would...

    Le Fleuron 1729 - 64 Gun Ship PoB Scratch Build in 1:48 - (Ancre Monograph-J. Boudriot/G. Delacroix)

Don’t try to blacken anything in the wood plus after cutting the brass hit it with a cut off wheel or grinder in a Dremel it’ll give you a nice fiat head.

Yes I used the brass black on Blandford. It works ok but to blacken just the ends of brass ? Not sure I want to do it. I may use bare brass as it will be an actual mechanical connection or just use the toothpicks.,

Donnie, maybe you misread. I will not blacken brass. As you said it bleeds, once it’s black you can barely handle it and the black comes off. It’s not worth the trouble. If I end up using it it’s staying brass. Steel would be better as it will oxidize sooner or later.

Tony, I feel a need to mention to you about blackening. Unless you or anyone (including myself) is not careful - that blackening agent can and will smear - yes - even after you think it is cured so to speak. When I did my Belle Poule cannons, it took a lot of work (at least I thought it did)...
