pictures from the USNA Museum Workshop

Personally, for the standing rigging I use cotton thread from bluejacket. I spin various thread diameters on a hand cranked rope walk from Model Expo. I wax the finished rope. Eventually when the model is done I mist ALL the rigging with clear flat acrylic spray, enough to coat the rope...

USS New York 74 gun ship of the line [COMPLETED BUILD]

Thank you for the compliment! This is going to be rather long, When I first started making scratch models and research discovered the ships burned in 1861, my next decision was what scale. I chose 1/72 for several reasons. My modeling in WW2 aircraft and vehicles made me familiar with the...

The adhesive on the copper tape appears to react with the primer. I have noticed that if I need to redo a section I did earlier (after a period of a few days at least), it is impossible to just peal it off. I need a chisel xacto blade to scrape it off and many times the primer comes with it.

USS New York 74 gun ship of the line [COMPLETED BUILD]

I did get ahold of Mike Wall who is now retired. He referred me to Gregg Dietrich who has taken over. I only was in contact with him for a potential appraisal of my ships, unfortunately with having to replace an A/C system costing north of 16,000.00 dollars I could not afford the 3500.00 fee...

USS New York 74 gun ship of the line [COMPLETED BUILD]

No, this is not a commission. I do not know if you are aware of this, but, along with the New York, 10 other ships were destroyed at Gosport (now Norfolk) Harbor in April 1861. I have completed the other 10 ships and this is the last of this project. I felt the episode in US Naval History of...

USS New York 74 gun ship of the line [COMPLETED BUILD]

New York has it's first light coat of primer. I use gray so I can draw the cannon ports on with pencil and see them easily to cut out. The garage is around 90 degrees so the paint will dry fast. The bowsprit and rudder holes are in. I will copper the bottom once the gun ports are all cut out...

USS New York 74 gun ship of the line [COMPLETED BUILD]

The New York's hull is planked, rough sanded, painted with diluted wood glue, and on stern quarter has been epoxied and sanded. (There maybe more epoxy sanding.) Yeah I know it is ugly NOW, but it gets better. I get alot of flak for my use of filler. This is an epoxy filler that I use...

USS New York 74 gun ship of the line [COMPLETED BUILD]

More progress on the New York. One side is planked "painted" with diluted wood glue to seal the seams where I did not super glue them. The yellowish color here and there is the wood glue. I did some rough sanding as well. It will need another glue coat to get the seams I missed the first...
