    Where’s the Brass Black

Brass instead of iron cannon in the 18th century and hinges and such are prime examples. If you leave these kind of parts as brass instead of simulated iron you have indeed damned accuracy. :) But in the end it is a hobby, so do what makes you happy. Allan

    Where’s the Brass Black

For those of us that are still amateurs and novices, what types of parts do you blacken? If I get a brass part, I like to show it off by leaving the gleam and shine. Historical accuracy be damned!

Your dimensions are truly appreciated. Any photos you have of the actual interim steps would also be appreciated. Thank you again

    Where’s the Brass Black

Are you talking about Birchwood Casey Brass Black or the old brand many of us loved called Blacken It? Blacken It closed when the couple that ran it out of their house died some years ago. There are other options but that brand was the favorite of many of us. A reason some have gone to copper...

    ZHL San Felipe 1690

I made a sailboat rudder. I used to make the brass blackening liquid myself, but my wife grumbled that I smelled like ammonia for three days afterwards))). This time I bought a ready-made tool. It doesn't smell like ammonia, brass blackens well, but unfortunately it doesn't want to blacken the...

    La Renommee 1/48th Scale

I'll be using 20 gauge wire like I did on BHR for the keel bolts. 0.8mm/.032in which equates to just over a 1.5inch bolt head. I saw Uwe use some square nails and liked the effect but for such a small boat as the Salamandre, 20ga should look appropriate. I'm glad I don't have to deal with...

    La Renommee 1/48th Scale

Thanks guys - Brad I bought some brass half hard square wire 4mm off amazon. It doesn't look much different than the nickel wire I used on the frames so no need to blacken it - just let nature take its course. I also bought a good pair of miniature bent nose needle plies with the serrated jaws...

Le Saint Philippe 1693 after Jean-Claude Lemineur (Ancre) in scale 1:48

Hey Paul, Thank you very much. The reason for my enquiry is that I would like to give my wife something very special for Christmas. I would like to give her the "Body of Christ" to watch over our home. My wife is very religious, which is why I have decided to give her this gift. I have already...

Le Saint Philippe 1693 after Jean-Claude Lemineur (Ancre) in scale 1:48

Thanks, Gunther. I have more money than time (and often, more money than good sense). Anyway, I purchased the square copper wire (no, I am not a scratch-building purist though I admire the trait). You can find it easily online in a variety of sizes - jewelry makers use it all the time. Just...

BALDER, Vlaardingen Herring Lugger from 1912, scratch build scale 1:50 Plate-On-Frame

Thanks, Herman. I give the last parts a Ballistol blackening as a basic layer. And then paint them black because on the Balder all the parts are also painted. My experience now is that this as a primer, makes the paint adhere better to the brass. So, a bit out ‘off the box’ ……. Regards, Peter

Hi Peter, impressive as usual. Do you paint or chemically blacken the metal parts?

    HMS Beagle OCCRE videos

I wouldn't pay much attention to the techniques the builder in the video is using, I quickly learned when I built my Beagle that the person in the video was doing a rush job, there are many instances where the video doesn't even match what the directions called for. One thing I have learned...

    HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

Good morning Allan. You read my mind. I have designed the sprocket wheels and axel. I am going to blacken some brass rods to be inserted. I have no idea how to make the tiny "nuts" for these rods tho. I will try and make a plan or just leave the rod protuding a little. I have a small chain which...

    HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

Good morning Allan. Thanks for this. My metal work leaves a lot to be desired as does my Cad design. Another issue (more of an excuse ROTF) is getting stock of items and machine tools into SA is super expensive with rand/dollar exchange and up to 100% import duties so I often make do with what I...

Grant, As always super well detailed. Deck planking is spot on! AND regarding your quote "I am going to attempt to do a CAD design and 3D print it" I read more and more about builders now starting to work using these softwares, and 3D printers; Will certainly add great amount of super well...

Modelship Dockyard - New Kit [Modelship Dockyard] PoF H.M.S. Enterprize 1774, the 1/48 version!

Interesting solution and I am guessing they would look great. Hope you post some photos when you get them. I have always just gone with copper wire and made nails as I can use these as is, then once in place and wiped clean with some water to get the filings removed, blacken in place with...

The Mighty Panokseon (Plank Board Ship)

Wow, it's been a little while. Time to catch up! So I was ultimately unsatisfied with the way the first exterior door looked. It was a little too plain in its appearance, so I brainstormed ways to spice it up a bit. I remember on my last visit to Korea some years ago the traditional exterior...

Sovereign of the Seas - Sergal 1:78 (with hopefully many added details)

Paul, Thanks for your advice. The Grapnel anchor comes in 20mm - no smaller - I had checked with that source (though your link did not contain any product) That other one that I just got is 15mm-better scaled…IMO Regarding the chains - I’m tempted to live with the existing one. I have several...

    HMS Vanguard - Amati - scale 1:72 - Foto

I did it as David Steele drew, all questions to him. I don't know what is the correct way.
