Hello Everyone!
This one is going to be special: with family hailing from Brittany (France) I am very excited to build an idealized model of boats I used to see everywhere during my childhood: the kit 1:20 Canot Breton from Air Loisirs.
My best friend’s family has an actual traditional canot, very similar to the model, on which they have sailed for generations (I had that chance too). Sadly, the boat has likely reached the end of its long life. Its wood has been rotting for many years, and despite repairs, it’s now past redemption.
So, in parallel to the kit, I will be scratch-building a copy of that boat (named Durzunel). I will be working from old pictures only, so I will use the kit as a basis and make the changes necessary to match the pictures as much as possible… I will probably have to improvise a bit (especially since all the pictures are in the water, so no clue about how it looks under the water line).
My friend’s father, who captained the canot for the last half-century, is turning 70 soon. The intent is to gift him the model as a celebration.
Below are pictures of Durzunel, and of the kit.
I will start by taking stock of the kit, use Durzunel’s pictures to adapt the planset and draw new parts. I will try to build the 2 boats simultaneously in order to use the kit as a guide for the scratch build.
