I decided that I am going to try something different. Some of my kits contain many many Britania metal fittings and I find them too heavy. So, I am going to try to replace these parts with 3D printed parts.

Here is a picture of the scanner that I purchased. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to interface to WIndows. The only thing I am unsure of is how the resolution will be for small parts. Well I will find out.

Once I am happy, or not, with the scanned object using a software called Skanect, I plan to proceed with 3D printing it using Freecad. Anyways that is the plan.

Yes me too! Have a 3D printer, well 2 in fact, but would love to see what you might achieve with the scanner.

I'll follow your experiment, I'm interested in 3d printing but at my age not sure I want to spend my time to learn. Keep us posted.

This sounds great Hope it works ok.
What kin of printer and scanner do most modelers use? I'm on the fence as to what to get and if it's feasible for ship modeling.
