If I had a lathe, I don't think I'd be looking for other ways to taper the spar.What a great way to quickly rough out a taper. I think I could then take the rough shape and put the piece on the lathe for final shaping and smoothing.

This doesn't thread it either. The teeth are used to cut the size, not thread it. Admittedly, I expect the finish won't be as smooth as other methods, but I think it would be fairly constant in diameter and finish up easily with sandpaper. Just my opinion, though, I've never tried it.That doesn't look tapered to me, just reduced in diameter. I usually just power a square strip through a metal drill gauge, which doesn't thread the dowel.
I've used 0.5 & 0.6 mm carbon fibre.
