I am a model builder that goes back and forth between model railroading and model ship/boats. I am planning a new O scale model railroad that will have a coastal Maine theme. To start it off, I've scratch built a 1/4" (O scale) model of a small boat shop. It is of my own design and not intended to represent any specific shop.
The photos below help tell the story of the build:
1 - Floor and framing used pre-stained strip wood
2 - Scratch-built work benches and power tools (band saw and drill press)
3 - 2 workers building a wherry on a strongback
4 - Clapboards were installed using individual wood strips (~ 1/2" X 6" scale) over lapped with a 3" revile
5 - I used my Chopper II to cut wood shingles 12" long using scale 1/2" X 3, 4, & 6" wood
6 - Ends of shop are covered with 1X12s, then wood shingles over that
7 - Rafter were cut and sized using my Ultimation Sander with Repeater tool
8 - The roofs were covered with more wood shingles. Over 3000 were used on the ends and roof
9 - Completed the building with a steam box sitting on an exterior deck. Outhouse on the far end along
10 - The model was installed temporarily on a piece of plywood and foam painted black. Details were added
11 - LEDs were installed during the build to light up the interior for better viewing

This was a fun project that took about 3 months to complete. It will sit in my harbor scene on a yet-to-be-built model railroad layout.

I’d love to build a boat in that shop.

A very nice and realistic model, Pete. You can be proud of this result!

Fantastic work Pete! Thanks for sharing. What did you make your power tools from. Like the rest of the build they look great.

Cheers,

Todd
Todd,
I've attached a couple of photos showing the bandsaw/drill press and the workbenches before they were installed inside the boat house. They are not great models on their own but are intended to give the illusion when looking through the windows and doors.

Pete,

Those are cool! I love the little details you've added. The clamps on the bench, the half hull models, saw dust under the band saw, etc. All add to the illusion of this being a working boat shed. Did you base your plan on any real building(s) or is it all your own original design?

The more I see of this the more I think I want to build something similar for my own yet-to-be-built model railroad layout.

Cheers,

Todd
