A question to the Belle Poule gurus ...

Hi to all,

a - perhaps stupid - question ..

should not the red joints of the planks be at the position marked in blue ?

proceeding with the planks it only gets worse ..

and if its ok (?) how do I join the planks when there is no support beneath ?

It will help a lot when you also add some filling wood so that you have enough meat for fixing the planking - something like @Thomas Marocke made on his model.
Butt joints of visible planking should be there, where on the real ship the center line of a double frame. The Belle Poule was french build, so she had usually over the complete length double frames. The blue line is only a bulkhead and not important for the location of a visible butt joint.

At the bottom and center you can see some double frames partly shown on the keel


Here you can get a feeling of the number of butt joints - this is the interpretation by Jean Boudriot - nobody knows exactly where the butt joints were. The shipwrights took the planks, which were available, sometimes shorter sometimes longer.....
