Built by Vickers Armstrong and commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy in 1913. It then sailed with its sister boat, AE 1, to Australia, then the longest voyage by a submarine.
During WWI, the AE 2 sailed various missions near German New Guinea and Fiji. It was then towed to Egypt in early 1915 and sent through the Dardanelles to the Sea of Marmara where it suffered mechanical problems and forced to surface. It was damaged by the Turkish torpedo boat, Sultanhisar. The crew scuttled the AE 2 and were captured by the Turkish.
