I have started painting some metal pieces in my AL King of the Mississippi kit and am having mixed results. I used primer, but these are parts where sanding them to improve adhesion is not really possible. My air brush is in storage at the moment and inaccessible. Thinking of using Krylon and hoping that gives me a better result without being too shiny. Any other brands that would work well that offer more colors in flat?

One possibility is to be your own paint manufacturer. Blick red.jpg
you are your own modeler's enamel paint line.
Maybe 10 primary and branch pigment tubes. total
Use a color wheel to get what and how much any other color.
Mineral spirits or terp to thin.
A learning curve and practice time - bit then total independence from buying tiny expensive bottles
that will readily polymerize in the bottle and need repurchase.
Floquil may be no longer - but you can do what they did by adding thinner and polymerizing binding agent. One tube for each color should last more than your lifetime. Will not polymerize if kept capped.
Air or hand brush. One time purchase.
